CDEV 216 Administration II:  Personnel and Leadership in Early Childhood Education Syllabus

Course Description:  

This course continues to introduce students to the basic principles for the establishment operation, supervision and evaluation of early care and educational programs.  Students will have the opportunity to solidify the understanding of state and federal mandatory rues and regulations, as well as practice problem solving techniques used by professionals who are administering early childcare centers.

Course Learning Objectives:  

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Identify and gain insight into self leadership style, philosophy and values.  
  2. Discuss various child care programs and how they differ in philosophy and goals.
  3. Identify current assessment tools and organizational structures of ECE programs.  
  4. Demonstrate the use of the Program Administration Scale.
  5. Explore and apply current interview techniques, hiring practices and governing laws.
  6. Summarize techniques and strategies to support and retain staff and to create a positive and supportive work environment.
  7. Give examples of components of an appropriate parent and staff handbook.
  8. Create a business plan and budget, listing the major categories of expenses.
  9. Identify community resources (including health and safety, USDA, grants, etc.) to assist with the sustainability of a child care/early educational program.
  10. Participate in a leadership/advocacy activity.
