Course Description:  

This course is designed for skill development and conditioning for intercollegiate baseball players. Emphasis will be on the development of baseball fundaments in all aspects of the sport including: hitting, base running, pitching, outfield play and infield play. The class also focuses on getting athletes physically and mentally ready to compete for a State Championship through weekly practices, conditioning and playing in game situations.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  1. Students will be able to discuss the history, rules, etiquette and terminology of baseball.
  2. Students will formulate an appreciation for the emotional and physical coordination necessary to perform baseball-specific fundamentals.
  3. Students will be able to analyze and properly execute advanced throwing, hitting, fielding, base running, and pitching fundamentals.
  4. Students will be able to select proper mental strategies for performing under pressure, handling adversity, and eliminating distractions during game specific situations.
  5. Students will engage in team building activities such as; contributing to the team's mission statement, developing player expectations and rules, and establishing player roles and responsibilities.
  6. Students will identify and create both short and long term baseball goals and regularly assess and adjust their goals to facilitate maximum achievement.
  7. Students will use baseball as a forum for personal development by demonstrating leadership, discipline, responsibility, time-management, and communication skills in a diverse team setting.
  8. Students will appreciate physical wellness and the ability to use baseball as a lifelong contributor to living a healthy lifestyle.

 

Student Learning Objectives: 

  1. Upon completion of KNIA 223 the student will be able to demonstrate correct mechanics for baseball specific skills.
  2. Upon completion of KNIA 223 the students will be able to construct a skill specific plan to improve their baseball performance.

COURSE EVALUATION:

  1. Demonstrated Participation is worth 48 points
    • Please see “Participation” rubric for areas concerning demonstrated participation.
    • 48 class meeting hours at 1 point per meeting for participation is 48 points
    • You may be dropped after missing 10% of the total classes, but make-ups are possible with prior instructor approval so always communicate with me!
    • Being present does not equate to participation. You must engage in learning the course material. Participation means continuous skill improvement practice for > 75% of the class
      period and contribute to classroom discussions. Also contains instructor’s subjective assessment of skills (see “skills” rubric).
  2. Skills evaluation, pre- and post- test 2x11 points (22 points)
  3. Skills application—skills used in game settings (30 points)
  4. Final Grading—

100 – 90 = A
89 – 80 = B
79 – 70 = C
69 – 60 = D
≤ 59 = F


ATTENDANCE/PARTICIATION/QUIZES:


Attendance is mandated by the state. A student may be administratively dropped from class upon accumulating more than 3 absences; so don’t miss. An absence is considered excused if it meets one of the College’s sanctioned reasons (personal illness, death of an immediate family member, or a College sponsored event. If a conflict arises, simply contact me by phone (714-564-6911) or email (nilles_tom@sac.edu) prior to the start of class and you will find that I am understanding and willing to work with you. In the event of an absence, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from classmates and complete missed assignments. Noteworthy:
1. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer participating
2. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending
3. It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline, as stated in the course schedule, you will receive a Pass or No-Pass after the deadline.


COURSE PROCEDURE:


1. Attend activity prepared to exercise. Baseball apparel is required unless instructed otherwise.
a. Men’s protective equipment in required.
b. Cleats, running shoes, and clothes are to be brought to class daily
c. No food on or in the facility.
