Meet Your Instructor: 

     Hello Fire Technology 103 Students, my name is Stephen Horner and I will be your instructor for this course. Let me tell you a little bit about myself, and my experience that makes me qualified to teach your class. I started my fire service career as a reserve firefighter with the Santa Ana Fire Department, and spent two years working for free learning the duties of a firefighter.  About the same time, I became a Fire Suppression Volunteer with Orange County Fire Authority at fire station 24 in Mission Viejo where I got paid $7.00 per emergency call.

Two-years later I was hired as a full-time firefighter with the Santa Ana Fire Department, and spent the next 28-years working in different disciplines of the department such as fire suppression, fire prevention, fire communications, and fire training. In April of 2012, the Santa Ana Fire Department transitioned over to the Orange County Fire Authority, and I have been working for over 6-years as a Hazardous Materials Captain, Urban Search & Rescue Plans Team Manager, Division 6 Administration Captain, Public Information Officer, and currently an Aircraft Rescue Fire Captain at John Wayne Airport.

As far as my education, I graduated from Santa Ana College with (4) Associate of Science Degrees, California State University Long Beach with a Bachelors Degree in Vocational Education, and a Masters Degree in Emergency Services. I really enjoy our 100% online classes, because it allows each and everyone of you to go to school around the clock. Course Description:
Provides career directed students, paid/or volunteer firefighters, and fire brigade member’s demonstrations on current techniques in the prevention of injuries and promotion of firefighter safety and survival while conducting routine and emergency fire operations.

Academic Honesty Policy:
If a student is found cheating on an exam/project, the student will receive a “zero” for that exam/project. Also, the student whose work is copied will receive a “zero” for the exam/project. A second incident of cheating will result in a course grade of “F” for the semester.

Academic Accommodation Policy:
A student with a disability, who would like to request an academic accommodation, is responsible for identifying herself/himself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS). To make arrangements for academic accommodation, contact the disabled Student Office in the Johnson Center, U-103, or phone (714) 564-6264, TTY (714) 564-6284 for a referral to the appropriate DSPS Department.

September 3rd – Labor Day Holiday (Monday)
September 9th– Last date to add a full-semester class with an add code and drop a full semester class and not owe fees and not receive a "W" grade.
September 14th – Last day to file ADT/certification petitions-Fall graduation.
September 28th - Last day to file pass/no pass for full semester classes.
October 12th – Last date to petition for CSU and IGETC Certification, degree & certificate for Fall graduation
November 12th – Veterans Day (Monday)
November 18th - Last Date to drop a full-semester class with a "W" grade.
November 22nd- 25th – Thanksgiving Day (Thursday - Sunday).
December 10th -16th – Final Exams Week
Students are expected to E-mail instructor first week of class to confirm course attendance and attend weekly web online class in which they are enrolled by completing posted requirements. The posted requirements for the class may include assignments, discussion boards, reading assignments, and examinations. Students should report absences due to illness to the instructor immediately upon returning to the online course.

Absence/Drop:
It is the student's responsibility to withdraw officially from a course.
Stopping attendance does not constitute a withdrawal. A student must formally withdraw through the Admissions Office. An instructor may drop a student who does not attend the first class session, due to class enrollment demands. A student may be dropped for excessive absence, when one more absence than the number of class hours per week occurs. A student maybe reinstated by the instructor.

Withdrawal from Class:
Students who cannot continue in a course have an obligation to withdraw officially through the Admissions and Records Office on any campus. Students are encouraged to consult with instructors concerning class withdrawals. Students may officially withdraw through the Admissions and Records Office through the last day of the 12th week of instruction (or 75 percent of a term, whichever is less) and receive a transcript symbol of W.
All instructor-initiated "EAD's" (excessive absence drops) through the 12th week or 75 percent of the term, whichever is less, will be assigned a "W".
The academic record of a student who remains in a class beyond the time allowed by district policy must reflect a symbol other than a "W", except under extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances are verified cases of accidents, serious illnesses, or other circumstances clearly beyond the control of the student. In these circumstances, the Dean of Enrollment Services may authorize withdrawal, which shall be recorded as "W” on the student's permanent record. A student who petitions under the policy for Extenuating Circumstance shall have verified in writing that:
A passing grade point average ("C" or better), as verified by the instructor or division dean, was being maintained in the class at the time of the occurrence, and the extenuating circumstance meets the criteria delineated above. Students should file petitions as soon as possible within the semester in which the extenuating circumstance occurred.
Petitions will NOT be accepted for consideration later than one year following the semester in which the extenuating circumstance occurred. A student who has a withdrawal (grade of "W") in the same course two or more times loses the privilege of priority registration for that course and must receive the approval of the appropriate Dean, Administrator, or Counselor to enroll in the same course.

Make-Up Exam Policy:
Students are allowed to make up one examination, if necessary. There will be Five (5) points automatically deducted from the score.

Attendance:
Students WILL be dropped for missing more than Two (2) weeks of inactivity in the online course, no exceptions. This is a school policy and is strictly enforced. Remember, failure to log into the course and participate constitutes inactivity. Each class week starts on Monday morning at 06:00AM and ends on Sunday night at 23:59PM.

Examinations and Quizzes:
All quizzes, mid-term, and final exam will be taken on blackboard. The exams & quizzes will be available starting on Monday of each week according to the syllabus class schedule and will close by the end of each week. This will allow the student to take the exam or quiz anytime during the week. The student will only get one chance to take the exam. Once you begin the test, you must finish it otherwise the system will lock you out of the exam. If you get locked out of the quiz or exam, please contact me to have it reset.

Discussion Boards:
Discussion Board questions are posted weekly and cover chapters 1 – 13 and the appendixes. To receive full credit for the discussion board question, respond with 300 words or more. In addition, please respond with 100 words or more to 3 other classmates’ postings. The discussion boards will be available starting on Monday of each week at 06:00AM and will close by the end of each week at 23:59PM on Sunday night. This will allow the student to complete the discussion board anytime during the week.

Term Paper
In order to pass the class, each student will complete a “10-Page” Term Paper including cover page and reference page with a minimum of “5” reference cites. The topic of the term paper is called “The Risks of a High-Hazard Occupation” and each student is responsible to conduct in-depth research on the hazards of firefighting. Pick any topic that affects the safety of firefighters’ in any capacity of the job; gather all kinds of data and information. Next, analyze critical information important to your paper, and document the findings in a systematic report. You may include charts and graphs in your term paper. The student will post the final semester paper in a word document the final week of semester.

Extra Credit
This semester’s extra credit will be a “Smoke Alarm Installation Event” (Location, Date, & Time to be determined). Each student will receive “50” extra credit points for attending and participating in the 6-hour event. You will be assigned to an installation team and go into residential homes to install smoke alarms. These smoke alarms are free through a federal grant program that allows fire departments to reach out to the communities and conduct these events. Smoke alarms saves lives! In addition to the 50 extra credit points, you will also receive a letter of appreciation signed by the Battalion Chief. This is a letter you have in your professional jacket and use in the future that shows community involvement.

1. 13 Quizzes x 10 pt. Each - 130 pts.
2. 14 Discussion Boards x 10 pts. each - 140 pts.
3. Midterm - 50 pts.
4. Final Exam - 100 pts.
5. Semester Paper - 100 pts.
Total points Available - 520 pts.

“B” – 416 to 467
“C” – 364 to 415
“D” – 312 to 363
“F” - 311 and below
