COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this class, you will increase your fluency in spoken American English, improve your listening skills, learn essential vocabulary, and practice American English conversational strategies. Additionally, you will acquire oral communication skills that will prepare you for Communication Studies 101 and other transfer courses.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

  • Select necessary and appropriate communication behaviors that will help accomplish students’ intended communicative function.

 

PREREQUISITE:

To take this course, you must be an English learner, and you must be taking or have completed Speech Communication N52B and EMLS 107.

Longman Dictionary of American English or another English- English dictionary (recommended)

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

Preparation outside of class and active participation during class are important for your success in Communication Studies 097. Homework assignments are due ON TIME. Points may be deducted for late homework. Come to class ready to discuss assignments. If you must be absent, call a classmate to get the assignment for the next class, email or check blackboard.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is crucial if you want to be successful in Speech Communication 097. If you miss three classes or are repeatedly tardy (late), you may be dropped from the class. In-class graded speaking/listening activities and quizzes cannot be made up. If you miss one of these activities, you agree to accept a score of “0” on that activity. See me as soon as possible before a class if you need to be absent.
