Course Description

  • From the catalog: “The development of dance in Western Europe and the U.S. from ancient times to the present. Explores dance as an emerging art form from the 15th through the 21st Century. Emphasizes the contemporary dance heritage of the United States.” This course explores the development of dance in Europe and the U.S. from ancient times to the present, emphasizing the dominant dance heritages of United States. We will use reading, lecture, video, class discussion, and movement exercises to examine a variety of dance styles and their cultural contexts. We will focus on stage forms such as ballet, modern dance, and jazz dance, as well as social and vernacular forms such as tap and hip hop and contemporary forms.  

 

Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Express a critical understanding of dance as a form of human cultural expression.
  • Identify and discuss the major periods and figures of Western Theatrical Dance.
  • Discuss certain historical factors that affected the development of Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary Dance. 
  • Write about dance in a clear, concise, and sophisticated manner while identifying key concepts of space, time, and energy utilized in the observed dance performance. 
  • Express an understanding for and appreciation of dance as an art form.

  • Participate and contribute to class lectures and small group discussions
  • Participate enthusiastically in class exercises requiring physicality - Yes, you will be moving!!!
  • Bring readings, notes, and writing materials to each class
  • Respect all quiz and exam dates and STUDY!
  • Respect your fellow classmates
  • Be responsible for all material presented in class 

 

Attendance and Participation

  • Regular attendance is required in order to succeed in this class. Please arrive on time and stay for the duration of the class. Attendance will be taken within the first 10 minutes of class. If you are late, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to sign in at the end of the class. 
  • A student may be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absences exceed 10% of the total scheduled hours of the class (approximately 4 classes), but it is the student’s responsibility to officially drop from the course. Failure to do so will result in receiving an “F” for the course. 

 

Course Requirements

  • Participate in all class discussions / exercises and complete all readings, quizzes, and assignments

A majority of class assignments will be done IN CLASS as movement exercises and are not available for make-up. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Quizzes will be given whenever a reading is assigned and will cover information in the reading. Quizzes MAY NOT BE made up. NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

  • Participate in and complete all exams.

Exams are mandatory. Exams can only be made up in the event of illness or emergency and if the instructor is informed of the absence via email by the student either prior to the exam or within 24 hours after the exam has taken place. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor to reschedule the exam. If the student fails to reschedule the exam, the student forfeits the ability to take the exam. Students are NOT PERMITTED to reschedule more than one (1) exam. Exams must be made up within one week of exam date. Once graded exams are returned, exam make-ups are no longer allowed. 

 

Absences

  • If you miss a class for any reason, it is YOUR responsibility to get the notes on the material covered that day and find out about announcements and assignments. Make friends or find a note buddy so that you will have access to the information. Please do not email me asking if you missed anything or asking for a copy of my lecture notes. I do not send copies of my lectures or my power point presentations through email or any other source.

 

Class Etiquette

  • It is expected that you will actively and energetically participate in all class discussions and activities and be respectful and courteous to your fellow classmates. 
  • Laptop computers and tablet devices are NOT PERMITTED during class time unless directed by the instructor. Always bring a notebook/paper and pen or pencil. All electronic devices must be turned off before entering the classroom. Use of technology and/or sound interruptions such as ringing phones and text alerts will not be tolerated and MAY result in a dismissal from the classroom.

 

Readings

  • I will NOT be using a required textbook for this class. I will be utilizing multiple sources and all articles to be read will either be emailed or posted on Canvas. All readings must be completed before you come to class.   

 

Canvas

  • Information about the course, assignments, and other announcements will be posted via Canvas. You are responsible for checking it regularly and will be held accountable for all information that is posted. For assistance, please contact the Academic Computing Center. 

 

Assignment Submission

  • All assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class on the date due. If you have a personal emergency or other circumstance that prevents you from finishing your assignment on time and submitting it as scheduled, email the assignment to me by the end of the class period or see me as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation. Late work MAY be accepted at the instructor’s discretion, but may not be eligible for full points. 

 

Extra Credit

  • Extra credit will come in the form of additional readings/viewings that coincide with extra credit questions on the exams, as well as possible bonus questions on quizzes. I offer a large amount of extra credit which I suggest you take full advantage of!
  • Additional extra credit MAY be offered at the discretion of the instructor. 

 

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty 

  • A direct quote from the SAC Catalog - “Academic dishonesty is seen as an intentional act of fraud, in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization, or uses unauthorized materials or fabricated information in any academic exercise.” I expect complete honesty. If you are having trouble with an assignment, please come talk to me as soon as possible. For help with your writing and paper editing, please contact the Tutorial Learning Center on campus. They are a valuable resource on campus that offers FREE tutoring for various subjects! 

 

Flu/Sickness

  • If a student is ill with a fever and/or flu-like symptoms, the student should refrain from attendance in class and presence on campus until the fever/flu has been broken for a full 24 hours. Any other contagious health issues should be given medical attention and the student should remain at home until advised by a doctor to return to campus. Frequent washing of the hands and proper cleanliness is highly suggested.

 

Emergency Evacuation

  • In the case of an emergency due to a FIRE, EARTHQUAKE, or other emergency, please STAY CALM! Please refer to the posted handout on emergency procedures.
