Environmental Geology

Textbook:  Environmental Geology by Carla Montgomery (any edition).    You will be expected to keep up with reading assignments.  Exams and Quizzes will contain questions on material in the book not covered in lecture.

 

Grading:  Grades will be based on a point system.  There will be approximately 675  possible points. Quizzes and Exams will be primarily multiple choice.  (Apperson machine form #100AS).

 

                        3 Exams  (100 points each)                   =  300 points

                        Final Exam                                          =  150 points

                        Best 5 of 6 Quizzes  (25 points each)     =  125 points

                        Field Trip                                             =   50 points

                        Assignments and Homework                =   50 points

                        Total                                                      =  675 points

 

The number of homework and other assignments may vary so it is quite likely that the final point total will not be exactly  675  points.

 

Bring a good eraser to all tests; scores will not be adjusted for incomplete erasures on answer sheets.

 

Final grades will be determined by the percentage of points earned divided into to the maximum number of points possible, as follows:         A =  100 to 85%, 

                                                B =  84 to 75%, 

                                                C =  74 to 60%, 

                                                D =  59 to 50%

                                                F =  49 to  0%

 

Field Trip:  A one day field trip to Dana Point Harbor has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday December 1  from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM).   Attendance and a short exercise will be worth up to 50 points

 

Attendance: You are expected to attend all class sessions.  Certain in-class assignments and all quizzes will not be made up for any reason.  Exams may be made up only if I am contacted and informed of your valid reason before the exam is given.  All make up exams will be essay format must be taken within one week from the time the original exam is given. 

 

Cheating:  Cheating and academic misconduct will not be tolerated and the Academic Honesty Policy of the college will be followed.  The minimum penalty will be a 0 on the test or quiz involved.  More serious cases will result in an F for the course and referral to the Dean of Students for further action.    See page 31 of the Santa Ana College Catalog for a full description of the Student Code of Conduct.

 

Electronic Devices:  Devices such as phones, games or ipods must be put away and turned off at all times in class.   Any use of a phone or other electronic device during a quiz or test will be considered cheating..

 

 

Learning Objectives:  After successfully completing this course a student will be able to:

 

            1 Demonstrate an understanding of the physical structure and morphology of the Earth and te operation of Earth systems due to plate tectonics

 

2. Analyze and apply the scientific method to problems which will result in reasonable and logical conclusions

 

            3, Assess and evaluate the impact of natural processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes and mass wasting events on the human environment.

 

4. Assess and evaluate the impact of human activities on the natural environment through factors such as air pollution, water pollution and changing climates.
