Course Description:

The course is designed to cover theories and concepts of values, interests, skills and personality as applied to the career/life planning process and its application to labor market trends. Short/long term career/life plans will be developed. Students will develop an awareness of diversity and its relationship to psychological, sociological and physiological forces within the work place.

 

Course Objective: these are topics we will explore, discuss, and review throughout the course of the semester.

  1. Career Development-Analyze theory and concepts of career and life planning
  2. Personal Exploration-Acquire the concept of interest, personality, skills, and values, as they relate to human growth and life stage development.
  3. Career Exploration-Develop a personal profile and relate it to labor market trends and resources.
  4. Career Information-Analyze and clarify intrinsic and extrinsic goals as they relate to personal career evaluations. Select a career option or options. Develop a life plan to achieve individual goals.
  5. Career Action-Employ a decision making process to implement or review a career/life plan, including an educational plan.

 

Student Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able toArticulate their interests, values, and feelings related to their career and educational goals. (Communication Skills)

  1. Assess goals and objectives by analyzing skills and values. (Thinking and Reasoning)
  2. Research career paths using interest and personality inventories and computer databases. (Information Management Skills)
  3. Create an educational plan to achieve an Associate Degree and/or transfer goal. (Life Skills)

 

Required Materials:

  1. Textbook: This course uses digital course materials designed using Open Educational Resources (OER), high-quality, openly licensed educational materials, rather than a traditional textbook. You can access all readings, videos, quizzes and other activities through our course site on Canvas. (https://rsccd.instructure.com). Our course materials were created and assembled by SAC Counseling Faculty and funded by the “Zero Textbook Cost Degree California Community Colleges Grant”. Santa Ana College is committed to student access and excellence. You will not have any additional cost for textbooks. Extra care and effort was involved to assure access to high-quality affordable materials. I am interested in your experience using these materials and welcome your feedback in an anonymous survey at the end of the course and at any time during the semester.

Course Credit:

  • Completion of Counseling 116 results in a letter grade that is applicable to an associate's degree and meets the California State University general education requirement in area E1.
  • Attendance is required for all sessions. Absence for more than 3 sessions will result in a student drop for excessive absences.
  • LAST DATE TO DROP the course and receive a “W” is on SUNDAY, November 18, 2018.

 

Class Policies:

 

  • Entering class late is not Three late shows will equal one absence.  It is your responsibility to have your absence changed on the roll sheet after class.

 

  • Grading is based on the content and completion of each portion of the assignment. Brief, non-thought out answers on open-ended question will not be awarded points.

 

  • Quizzes will be given at the start of class and cannot be made up.

 

  • Assignments are due on the date specified and will be collected at the beginning of the class session.

 

  • Unless otherwise indicated, assignments will not be accepted late.

 

  • Cell phones should be turned off or silenced in class.

 

  • The instructor reserves the right to change or modify the syllabus and assignments as deemed necessary.

 

  • Students are expected to follow the Guidelines for Student Conduct as outlined in the College Catalog.

 

  • All work submitted must be the work of the student. Academic honesty is expected at all times. The class will follow the Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the College Catalog.
