COURSE PURPOSE
This course is designed to assist students in successfully establishing and achieving education, career, and life goals. Students are guided through a reflective process that focuses on values, interests, personality, skills, and learning styles. Career and education options are researched, and students are exposed to college resources and support services. Decision making models and goal setting techniques are examined and will be used to develop short and long term education, and career and life plans. CSU/UC 3.0 units.
This course will highlight:
- Personal Awareness- Gain a better understanding of yourself and your environment
- Personal Exploration- Understand the variables that affect life choices
- Career Exploration- Integrate information about yourself with the world of work
- Career Goals- Clarify goals on the basis of occupational preferences and values
- Career Planning- Develop a career plan to achieve individual goals
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will actively engage in class, complete class activities and assignments will be able to:
- Identify at least one career path using interest and personality inventories and online resources.
- Describe how their personality preferences, interests and values correlate with career and life decisions.
- Develop a semester educational plan towards achieving an Associate Degree and/or transferring by using Plan A, B or C.
- Demonstrate 5 transferable skills through the development of a resume.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
You do not need to purchase a textbookfor this course.This course uses digital course materials designed using Open Educational Resources (OER), high-quality, openly licensed educational materials, rather than a traditional textbook. Our course materials were created and assembled by SAC Counseling Faculty and funded by the “Zero Textbook CostDegree California Community Colleges Grant”. Santa Ana College is committed to student access and excellence. You will not have any additional cost for textbooks. Extra care and effort was involved to assure access to high-quality affordable materials.
MBTI & SII inventories ($16 material fee) paid online through Webadvisor or at the Student Business Office in room Village 205B.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Attendance and Participation:
Class participation is expected, welcomed, and valued, as it is a foundation of this course. Regular attendance and participation is mandatory and crucial to your final grade because many assignments involve in-class activities and group work.
- You will be expected to attend every class, arrive on time, stay the entire session, and participate in the class discussions/activities.
- When arriving after class has started, it is your responsibility to have your absence changed on the roll sheet.
- To fully participate in class discussions and activities, you must read the assigned textbook chapter / supplemental articlesand complete any assignmentsbefore coming to class.
Class Environment:
Trust is a huge factor in allowing open dialogue and participation within the class; therefore, you are expected to respect the instructor and your peers by actively listening, staying engaged in class and treating the personal issues and feelings of others with the utmost respect.You will be expected to comply with the Standards of Student Conduct (See 2018-2019 SAC Catalog,sac.edu)
Absences / Drop Policy:
It is your responsibility to officially withdraw from the course if you decide to drop the class. However, the instructor may drop you from the course for excessive absences (See 2018-2019 SAC Catalog, www.sac.edu)Please be on time! Email the professor if you are going to be absent.
Late Assignments:
- It is your responsibility to get missed assignments/handouts from the instructor or from Blackboard if you are absent or late to class when you return to class. Assignments will be due for 100% credit the next class period after you return (i.e. Absent on Tuesday, Come to class on Thursday, Assignments due the next Tuesday).
- Not having your assignment turned in on time due to technical difficulties such as: no printer, no printer ink, computer malfunction or computer lab not being accessible is not an excuse for missing and/or late assignments.
- Makeup Policy: Assignments can be turned in for ½credit, if they are turned in the day after the assignment was due. No credit if handed in later than one class period.
Academic Honesty:
Students are expected to maintain academic honesty in all cases. All work must be your own, original work. Students cheating on papers or copying another student’s work will receive a grade of zero.
Extra Credit:
All extra credit needs to be turned in before the last class meeting.

Electronic Devices:
All electronic devices (cellular phones, iPods, iPads) must be turned off and put away during class time. Do not keep your phone on your desk. No Texting, checking Facebook, Tweeting, watching YouTube, etc. during class.
Grading:
You have control over your final grade. Your assignments and class attendance/participation will
ultimately impact your final grade.
