Course Description: 

Comprehensive up-to-date usage of grammar including punctuation, capitalization, number style, spelling, vocabulary development, and other business writing skills.  Designed for today’s administrative assistant, secretary, word processor, or other office employee.

Additional Course Information: 

Assignments, Testing, and Grading

  • Assignments will consist of text readings, in-class assignments, and homework assignments. An assignment list and due dates are available on our Canvas course Syllabus page at rsccd.instructure.com.
  • Vocabulary quizzes will be given weekly at the beginning of class (no make ups.)
  • Unit quizzes will consist of short answer, true/false and multiple-choice questions.
  • The final exam will be cumulative and consist of short answer, true/false and multiple-choice questions.

There are no make-ups for in-class assignments or vocabulary/spelling tests. A student may make-up one unit quiz.  No make-ups for the final exam.

Late Work Policy

Homework assignments are due by the date and time indicated on the Canvas assignment. Assignments submitted after the due date will receive ½ credit.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  • Students will write memos, letters, and other business documents using correct formatting, grammar, and sentence structure.
  • Students will read and analyze business documents identifying incorrect word usage, capitalization, and sentence structure and will make corrections to the documents.
  • Students research and write about a topic of personal interest.

  • Reading & Writing: Students will read effectively and analytically and will comprehend at the college level.
  • Thinking & Reasoning: Students will identify and analyze real or potential "problems" and develop, evaluate, and test possible solutions using creative and critical thinking, analysis and synthesis, quantitative reasoning, and/or transfer of knowledge and skills to a new context as appropriate.
