Class Policies
Attendance: Your class participation is expected and valued as it is the foundation of this course. Based on the importance of in-class discussions, group interactions, and individual exercises, attendance and active participation are critical aspects of this class and will be factored into your final grade. You are expected to attend every class, arrive on time, and stay the entire session.
Students may incur ONE absence without loss of points. More than one absence will result in a deduction of 5 points per absence.
Students with more than 3 unexcused absences will result in loss of all participation points and may be dropped from the class.
You are REQUIRED to let me know, IN ADVANCE, if you are going to be absent or late for class. You may tell me, IN ADVANCE, via email. Otherwise, it will be considered an unexcused absence.
In-class work (e.g. presentations, exams, quizzes, and group activities) cannot be made up if you are absent.
If you are absent or late to class, it is your responsibility to get missed assignments/handouts from one of your classmates.
You are expected to problem-solve with the instructor if you experience anything outside of class that is hindering or preventing you from doing well in class.
Drop/Withdrawal Policy: It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to officially withdraw from the course if you decide to drop the class. Students may drop and receive a “W” grade up until November 18, 2018.
Tardiness Policy: 2 tardies of 7 minutes or more constitutes 1 absence. Excessive tardiness will negatively affect your overall grade.
Electronic Devices: All electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, etc.) must be TURNED OFF and put away during class time (unless the class activity requires use of electronic devices). No texting, checking Facebook/Instagram, tweeting, or watching YouTube during class. Each offense will be noted and result in reduction of your class participation points.
Assignments: All homework assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date (see attached tentative schedule). Late assignments will not be accepted (Exceptions will be considered if you contact me prior to the start of class informing me you cannot attend and the reason why due to an extenuating circumstance). ALL submitted assignments must be typed, unless instructed otherwise.
Extra Credit: Upon instructor’s approval, extra credit points may be earned by satisfactorily completing additional assignments or attending relevant workshops and/or conferences.
Journals: Journal assignments are a way of letting me know how you are doing in regards to the lessons we have discussed in class. Each journal is worth 5 points.
Respect and Confidentiality: Respect and confidentiality are very important in my class. I strictly require that you demonstrate respect for one another, especially for others lifestyles, viewpoints and ideas. Students are asked to listen and contribute in a respectful manner. Confidentiality is mandatory due to the topics shared in class.
Academic Honesty Policy: Academic dishonesty or cheating is defined as an intentional act of fraud in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization. This includes assisting other students in acts of dishonesty, whether it is in coursework or on exams. There is absolutely NO tolerance for academic dishonesty in this class. Any student caught cheating or assisting another student in the act of cheating will receive an “F” grade for the course.
Accommodations for Disabilities: Your success in this course is important to me. If you have a disability that may have some impact on your ability to do well in this course, I encourage you to speak with me as soon as possible. Also, please contact Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) so that we can collaborate on your classroom accommodations in a timely manner. DSPS is located in B-101, and their phone number is (714) 241-5769. The DSPS office requires documentation of your disability in order to receive reasonable accommodations. If you do not have documentation, they will work with you to acquire it. I look forward to supporting you to meet your learning goals.
