Message from Your Instructor
Welcome to English 101! This is a college-level class that is geared toward preparing and honing your critical writing and reading skills. In this class, we will explore American cultural myths through critical readings, discussions, and academic writing. Many of the topics that we read and analyze are controversial and (at times) difficult to discuss. We all have the right to voice our opinions, but they must be expressed in a thoughtful and respectful manner. With that said, I look forward to our discussions and to our semester together.

Students with Disabilities
Your success in this course is important to me. Santa Ana College and I are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all individuals with disabilities. If you have a disability that may have some impact on your ability to do well in this course, I encourage you to speak with me as soon as possible. Also, please contact Disabled Student Programs & Services so that we can all collaborate on your classroom accommodations in a timely manner. DSPS is located in U-103, and its phone number is (714) 562-6264. The DSPS office requires documentation of your disability in order to receive reasonable accommodations. If you do not have documentation, someone will work with you to acquire it. I look forward to supporting you to meet your learning goals.
Attendance and Participation

Please arrive and be prepared to stay for the duration of class. Leaving class early or arriving after the start of class will result in you being marked as late. Three late marks will add up to a single absence from class. While absences may occur during the course, being absent for five class sessions may result in your grade being docked or being dropped from the course. If you decide to drop the course on your own, it is your responsibility to complete all the procedures to drop the class completely. If you stop attending the course and did not complete the drop procedure before the final drop date, you will receive an “F” grade. It is important that you attend class, come prepared to discuss readings, and actively participate during each meeting. With the majority of your work being directly connected with your attendance to class discussions, workshops, and activities, it will be difficult to make up work you have missed. That being said, it is strongly recommended that you exchange contact information with another student in class in case you are absent from a meeting. Although you are not in class, you will be held accountable for the information presented.
|
Cell Phone Use Before you walk in, either silence your cell-phone or turn it off. You will be asked to leave class for excessive cellphone use. Please be courteous to your peers by stepping outside to take a phone call or answer a text in an emergency situation. If asked to leave, the worked missed cannot be made up, and your dismissal will count as an absence. |
Learning Center
The Learning Center offers assistance with Communication Studies, English, Modern Languages, and Reading classes. You will be able to go to the Learning Center to receive assistance with your essays and to complete Directed Learning Activities or workshops (which will assist you in developing your papers). I might assign DLAs as extra credit.

Essays: Late work is only accepted for the essay assignments. Your total grade will be deducted 5 points for each day the assignment it late. Each essay is to be submitted on Canvas by 11:59pm on the due date. If your essay submitted after 11:59pm, it will be considered late, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to submit. If you experience any issues while submitting through Turnitin, email your essay as a PDF or Word document to me by 11:59pm, so it will not be marked late. However, it is your responsibility to submit your essay via Canvas as soon as possible, after you have emailed it to me. I will not grade essays that have not been submitted via Canvas.
It is completely up to you whether or not you wish submit a late assignment. However, keep in mind that you are deducted 5 points each day the assignment is late. It may be worth submitting your essay a day late. Essays are counted late if they are submitted after 11:59pm on the due date. For example, if you submit your essay at 12:03am on July 13th when your essay was due by 12:59pm on July 11, it will be considered late and will automatically be deducted 5 points. It doesn’t matter if you submit your essay at 12:03am on July 12th or 11:30pm on July 12, the essay will be deducted 5 points. If you submit your essay after 12:59pm on July 12, your essay will be deducted an additional 5 points. Your essay will be deducted 5 points for each day it is late.
Quizzes, discussion posts, and exams: Late quizzes, discussion, rewrites, and exams will not be accepted. No Exceptions. Make sure to regularly view the course calendar for upcoming assignments.
Essay Rewrites

Students are allowed three absences. In-class activities cannot be made up due to absences. If you miss more than three class meetings, you may be dropped from the course. To do well in this class, you should be prepared to arrive on time. I will take attendance at the very beginning of class. Students who arrive 15 minutes or later will be marked absent. If you leave class early, you will be marked absent. In-class activities due to tardiness can not be made up. Please notify me in a professional email if you will be late or absent.

The schedule listed in the course outline is a projected schedule of what we will be discussing in class and the dates items are due. In other words, you must have the read the readings assigned and be ready to turn in your work that day. We will return to some of the readings as the semester progresses. I may adjust the schedule throughout the course of the semester. If that occurs, I will inform you of any changes in advance. It is your responsibility to be aware of changes, due dates, exams, and any other assignments
Class Resources
Use the following resources when writing your essay. The first resource is a link to an online book, Writing for Success, which you may access online or download as a PDF. This textbook provides general to specific information about writing and grammar. Use this as supplemental information if you feel you need extra/different information than what is presented in our Little Seagull Handbook or class lectures. The second resource is a link to a online writing lab that will help you in most of your college courses. It explains and provides an example of APA and MLA guidelines. The final link will take you to a citation generator, so that you don't have to create all your citations from scratch. Make sure that you check the citations against the Purdue Owl information.
If you have any questions about the course, due dates, uploading on Canvas, post on the General Course Questions.
