Meet Your Instructor:
Chantal Lamourelle has been a Professor at Santa Ana College since 2013 in the Child Development and Education Studies Department. She has been in the field of Early Childhood Education since the age of 15. Her family owned and operated two child care centers in Orange County (O.C.) that cared for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Chantal has a been a teacher for infants to adults for over 25 years in many diverse settings. From a preschool teacher, grant writer, Education Director at Pretend City Children's Museum, O.C. Department of Education Consultant and community children's advocate have afforded her the opportunity to learn with some of the most influential professionals in the field of early care and education. Chantal truly loves to teach and she strives to continue to be a student of life as well. In her free time, Chantal loves to sing, act, hike, spend time with her family, explore, create, and build stronger connections across communities.
Chantal is Online Teaching Certified and has earned her Canvas Bronze and Silver certifications.
Course Description: This course examines the major physical, psycho-social, and cognitive/language developmental milestones for children, from conception through adolescence. Using developmental theories & research methodologies, course emphasis will be on typical and atypical development, maturation processes & environmental factors. Students will also observe children, evaluate individual differences and analyze characteristics of development at various stages.
The course is divided into five (5) major sections:
- Introduction to Development
- Conception to Toddlers (birth to 2 years old)
- Preschoolers (2 to 7 years old)
- Middle Childhood (7 to 11 years old)
- Adolescence (11 to 17 years old)
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Each section will explore growth and development patterns that are characteristic of the particular period of maturation. Notable theorists in the field of psychology will be introduced throughout the course.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe major developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence in the areas of physical, psychosocial, cognitive and language development.
- Identify how cultural, economic, political, historical contexts affect children’s development.
- Identify and compare major theoretical frameworks related to the study of human development.
- Apply developmental theory to child observations, surveys, and/or interviews using investigative research methods.
- Identify characteristics of typical and atypical development at various stages.
This course transfers to the California State University and the University of California. The Course Outcomes have been negotiated with the Community College system and are a part of a 24 unit articulation agreement for the child development programs.

1. 2. Have frequent and dependable internet access with a high speed modem;
