Required Text: Rock Music Styles: A History 6th ed. By Katherine Charlton (E-book available through www.coursesmart.com) Mc-Graw-Hill Pub.
Course Goals: Music 104 (Rock Music History and Appreciation) is a historical survey of rock music from its beginnings in the early 50's to the present. Rhythm & Blues, Rockabilly, the British Invasion, Motown, Soul, Folk Rock, Hard Rock, Punk, Heavy Metal, and various Alternative Rock styles will be discussed. Personalities and musical styles will be related to the sociology of the time period being studied. The class will focus upon developing and improving one's listening skills, as well as, a general survey of the styles, artists, performance practices, and socio-cultural factors of the music studied. You are required to complete assignments in advance and participate in class discussions. The purpose of the class is to develop the beginnings of informed critical listening and thinking skills as they pertain to the Art of Music.
Grading: Two Exams, 30% each; 1 Concert Review, 20%; Listening Logs (in class assignments) 20%.
Concert Attendance Report: You are required to complete one (1) Concert Attendance Report. YOU MUST ATTEND ONE LIVE PROFESSIONAL CONCERT, and type a two page concert review describing your experience. Please double space your report and use a 12 POINT TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to attend and experience a live performance of LIVE music. You MUST ATTEND the concert in person and in its’ entirety. No electronic or other media transmitted performances count towards completion of this assignment. The live concert you attend MUST take place during our Summer 2018 Session.
Since its summertime, there are MANY artists and tribute (cover) bands playing at the OC Fair (www.ocfair.com) which runs from 7/13-8/12. However, you need to see a performance early enough so that you will have enough time to write your review, which is due on 8/6. If you still read print media, the Sunday Calendar section of the LA Times or the Show section in the OC Register, as well as the OC Weekly are a few of the many excellent resources for finding concerts and other arts events in Southern California. If you are unaware of the status of a particular concert for which you are interested in attending. please check with the instructor prior to attending. Many “non popular music” concerts will count for this report, again, please check with me before attending. Non-professional concerts will not count for this class regardless of how honest the oversight may have been.
Please staple the program and your ticket stub to the review. I am NOT concerned with perfect spelling and grammar (but PLEASE spell check your review and make it as coherent as possible). I want to read about your reaction to the performance. You may talk about the dress, venue, artist, instrumentation or anything you think was relevant to the performance. Use STANDARD formats, (Turabian, MLA, Chicago) use double spacing and a 12 point Times New Roman font. The two page minimum may not include photos or graphics, although they can be interesting at the end of a report. Invalid concerts will NOT be acceptable no matter how honest the oversight may have been. Please e-mail me at: marr_john@sac.edu if you have any questions.
Your concert report is due on 8/6/18!
Concert Reports are due ONE WEEK after the date of the performance.
