Course Description: This course is designed to teach you fundamental concepts related to interpersonal communication across a variety of interactions, such as those with friends, coworkers, family members, and romantic partners. Being an effective communicator helps people develop and maintain healthy relationships. Effective communicators are also perceived as more credible and competent in the workplace. Thus, being a skilled communicator is valuable in one’s personal and professional life.
Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process with eligibility for English 100 or completion of ENGL 52 with a grade of Pass or “C” or higher
Speech 101 Student Learning Outcomes: After this class, you will be able to:
- Students understand the role interpersonal communication plays in relation to self-concept, perception, and emotional processes.
- Students identify the elements of the model of communication.
- Students analyze their own relationships using theories of interpersonal communication.
- Students demonstrate proficiency in the use of skills necessary for competent interpersonal communication.
- Students understand the role of verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and listening in the communication process.
