Meet Your Instructor: Michael Briones
Briones earned his Bachelor of Music from California State University, Long Beach and his Master of Music from Azusa Pacific University studying music performance at both schools. He coaches at several high schools in and out of Santa Ana, he has given several master classes, and he has several students who have achieved honor groups, including the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the performance practices of contemporary American & World popular music with an emphasis on Big Band Jazz. This course will focus on developing fundamental skills in sight-reading, improvisation and exposing students to a variety of playing styles that include, but are not limited to: Swing, Latin Jazz, Ballads, Rock and other popular genres.

You will:
- Demonstrate in sound and time a realization of the jazz ensemble musical score appropriate to the musical genre; they will demonstrate in performance a command of musical techniques related to rhythm, pitch, tuning, articulation, balance, and expressive interpretation.
- Be able to produce creative and artistic expression through rehearsal and performance of jazz ensemble literature.
