Course Description:
This is the second semester of a two semester series (219 & 229) designed to introduce the fundamentals of chemistry. An emphasis will be placed on analytical approaches to problem solving. The laboratory will focus on thermodynamics, equilibrium and electrochemistry using various quantitative experiments. An application of equilibrium will be accomplished using ion analysis through qualitative experiments. In order to be successful in both lecture and lab it will be essential to develop a thorough understanding of equilibrium, especially as it relates to solubility, acids/bases, and complex ions The major topics, lecture assignments and exam information can be found in the unit objectives for the course.
The course will consist of 3 hours of lecture and 6 hours of lab each week. Laboratory attendance is mandatory and students are required to attend on campus during the scheduled times.
Textbook Information:
- Chemistry, Gilbert/Kirss/Foster/Bretz, 2nd edition
- Semimicro Qualitative Analysis, J.J. Lagowski & C.H. Sorum, 8th edition
- Student Laboratory Research Notebook, Phanco
- Access/Code for Norton Smartwork5 - online homework system
Student Learning Objectives:
As with any course, a key student-learning outcome is the mastery of the course content. With this course content mastery, students will also develop the following skills:
- Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content during periodic exams and quizzes throughout the semester.
- Students will be able to provide a written and/or oral explanation of chemical concepts using the appropriate scientific language and writing style with sufficient supporting evidence during exam, presentation and lab reports.
- Students will be able to generate, record, analyze and discuss experimental data while completing lab notebooks and reports.
