EMT 105 Syllabus
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a course for EMT. Satisfies requirements for County/State EMS Authority. Prepares student to take the National Registry EMT certifying exams. If you pass the EMT course and skills and all of the additional certifying tests, you receive California and National Registry certification for EMT and license to practice in the County of Orange.

32 hours of clinical arranged
16 hours in an emergency room
16 hours in an ambulance
16 hours of lab arranged: Includes skills preparation for college credit plus skills for OCEMS accreditation.
PREREQUISITES:
American Heart Association (AHA) CPR "Healthcare Provider" card (2010) or "BLS Provider" card (2015)
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- To identify the overall role of the EMT
- To demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts of anatomy and physiology of the body systems, with special emphasis on the cardiopulmonary system.
- Be able to identify and understand terminology pertaining to vital body functions.
- To perform skills for initial life-saving evaluation and the carrying out of prescribed life-saving measures.
- To identify the overall role of the EMT
- To demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts of anatomy and physiology of the body systems, with special emphasis on the cardiopulmonary system.
- Be able to identify and understand terminology pertaining to vital body functions.
- To perform skills for initial life-saving evaluation and the carrying out of prescribed life-saving measures.
- To perform evaluative techniques for conditions needing treatment following initial emergency care.
- To recognize and treat various traumatic and medical emergencies.
- To perfect techniques needed to monitor the patient’s condition during transport.
- To recognize and treat special emergency problems, (i.e.) obstetric and pediatric problems.
- To demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts of medical-surgical asepsis.
- To demonstrate techniques for extrication of trapped persons.
- To perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation using the American Heart Association Guidelines.
- Successfully complete a 16-hour rotation in an Emergency Room
- Successfully complete a ride-a-long of 16-hours on a BLS ambulance unit.
Please note: You will be responsible for the unit objectives in the EMT textbook/workbook. These objectives also include skills techniques that are required by the US Department of Transportation, the State of California and County of Orange.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- COMMUNICATION & INFORMATICS
The graduate EMT will synthesize communication skills and technology to support decision-making, education and documentation of care to the patient in the prehospital/emergency care settings.
- THINKING, REASONING & LIFE SKILLS
The graduate EMT will synthesize the EMT process and best current practices to differentiate and apply identified concepts to provide safe care and advocacy for patients and families in prehospital/emergency care settings.
- CAREERS, CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY & DIVERSITY
The graduate EMT will be accountable and responsible for EMT practice, employing professionalism in the role of the certified/accredited EMT.
