Course Description: 
Fourth course of the academic ESL track program developing academic skills through reading two-page authentic texts, writing expository essays, grammar, speaking, and listening skills with short lectures or speeches on familiar and academic topics. Five high school elective credits may be granted if student passes the course successfully. Open Entry/Open Exit.

Additional Information:  

Tests/Lessons/Homework Assignments:
Students take ESL pre/post-tests, CASAS, and El Civics tests. Formative Assessments will include class work and unit tests, teacher observation, student portfolios/projects, and other tests/assessments as provided by the instructor. Students will also be given an opportunity for self-assessments.
Classroom lessons/materials focus on academic language skills with emphasis on reading, writing, grammar, and listening/speaking on the following life skills categories: basic communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be given.


Grading Standards:
Students who attend at least one class meeting receive one of the following grades at the end of a semester/session:
COM (complete Intermediate ESL 2 posttest with 75 percent or higher)
P (pass)
SP (satisfactory progress)
NP (no measurable progress)

Attendance Requirements:
Students who do not attend the first class meeting, or are absent for five days of classes within a
2-week period without the instructor’s approval, may be dropped.

Student Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Identify text type, audience, and purpose by reading titles, subtitles, introductions, charts, and graphics in a two-page authentic text.
  • Write an expository essay with multiple paragraphs with a thesis, supporting details, and a conclusion, referring to the ideas of others.
  • Determine the meaning of idioms in figurative language in clear contexts.
  • Choose and use the appropriate definition among multiple definitions in an English learners’ dictionary of words with clear differences between meanings.
  • Use academic search engines to research sources for writing support.
