Course Description:

The fourth of seven integrated ESL core courses. Emphasizes comprehending and participating in conversations, communicating needs and opinions, reading from academic and informational text, and performing written tasks. Exposes students to authentic spoken and written content, to prepare students for college, the workplace, and civic participation. Open Entry/Open Exit.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

        • Answer comprehension questions to demonstrate an understanding of written materials. 
        • Write a short, loosely-organized paragraph based on personal experiences or familiar materials, in response to a visual or written prompt.                                                      

Tests/Assessments/Lessons/Homework Assignments:

EL Civics and other assessments as provided by the instructor. Classroom lessons/materials focus on the following life skills categories: basic communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be given.

 

Academic Honesty:

Lack of honesty in the classroom is a serious matter at Santa Ana College. Any form of cheating on tests, turning in work that is not one’s own (plagiarism), talking during tests, giving false information to instructors, and using cell phones or other photographic devices without instructor approval is unacceptable and is subject to disciplinary action. If you have questions or are confused by anything during a quiz, exam, or assignment, please ask for help from the instructor. Students must adhere to the Guidelines for Student Conduct that is listed in the SAC Catalog.

P (Pass) [Students earn a CASAS Scale Score of 210 or higher on their CASAS reading tests and pass other assessments (multiple measures) as determined by the instructor.] 

SP (Satisfactory Progress) [Students have 12 or more hours of attendance.]

NP (No Measurable Progress) [Students have fewer than 12 hours of attendance.]

           

Attendance Requirements:

Students who do not attend the first class meeting or are absent for five days of classes within a 2-week period without the instructor’s approval may be dropped.

Meet Your Instructor:  Adrian Rios

Biography: Hello my name is Adrian Rios and I have been teaching ESL within the Rancho Santiago Community College District since 2003. I have taught all of the beginning levels such as ESL 1, 2, and 3. Within the great experience, I have taught students from 18 different countries and have become accustomed to adopting a multicultural perspective.  Within the last year, I have now been assigned to teach Intermediate Low. I am born and raised in the wonderful City of Santa Ana. I have been involved in education for the past 27 years and I have enjoyed this special journey.
