  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES:

Students will further development of conversational skills. Review of language structures as well as reinforcement of new vocabulary and idioms through discussions of reading selections dealing with historical and current events to deepen appreciation of Hispanic cultures. Students will complete a thorough review of grammar, verb conjugations and will build their proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, writing and reading.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

·       engage in intensive language practice in all the four skills of language learning: writing, reading, speaking, and listening;    

·       use listening and speaking skills in a variety of small and large group activities;

·       analyze reading segments on a diverse number of cultural topics;

·       review and improve usage of appropriate grammatical points which include relevant vocabulary, verb conjugations, and regional usage of common lexicon.

 

Required Texts

  • Encuentros Maravillosos: Gramática a través de la literatura By Abby Kanter, 2nd Edition.
  • A good Spanish/English Dictionary is required.

Requirements

 

  • Attendance and Participation. Students have to be on time, prepared (bring textbook) and be active in listening and practicing Spanish. Being absent is not an excuse for being unprepared or not turning in work. Medical and court emergencies will be excused only when presented with an original written excuse as proof that YOU were sick during class hours. In order to participate, you must be present. Class participation is inclusive of active oral contribution to the class and small group activities. Vocabulary for each chapter must be studied at home before class.

 

  • Class attendance is mandatory. Your FINAL grade will be lowered by 5% for each unexcused absence.

 

  • Punctuality is essential. If you are tardy and/or leave early (15mins) THREE times it will constitute as ONE absence. Only excused absences due to personal MEDICAL or COURT circumstances are excused with proper documentation.

 

Assessments and Projects:

 

  • Exams: There are 3 exams in the semester and they all have equal value. The exams consist of reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression. ALL EXAMS MUST BE TAKEN IN CLASS (no labs, test centers, offices, etc.). NO MAKE-UPS.

 

  • Mini presentation: Students will present brief oral presentations in class about topics discussed in class. Instructor approval of theme is required.

 

  • Final Project: At the end of the semester, you will be required to present an 8-minute speech on a researched approved topic.

 

  • Homework. Homework must be turned in on time. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  The accepted format for your assignments are .pdf, .doc, or .docx. Also, use MLA format for your assignments, write complete sentences and label your assignments.

  • This course combines the use of textbooks, supplementary materials, PPT presentations, videos, photographs, online lab assignments, and music. All the course content used, assigned and discussed in class could be used for the exams taken in class.

 

  • TECHNOLOGY (Blackboard): The instructor will use Blackboard as a repository to find documents, review sheets, and grades. Students will use Blackboard to submit ALL homework assignments, if instructed to.

 

Additional notes

 

  • Only registered students are allowed to attend class. Therefore, do not bring friends, relatives, pets, or children to class.

 

  • Turn off your cellular phones during class; it will help us avoid unnecessary interruptions.

 

  • PLAGIARISM and CHEATING will not be tolerated. Read the SAC Catalog regarding the District’s definition, policy, and consequences of being reported for academic dishonesty.
