Course Description:

This course is designed specifically to teach the students how to communicate clearly, think critically, and express their ideas and thoughts in expository and argumentative paragraphs. Throughout the semester, students will be focusing on writing effective topic sentences, maintaining a strong focus and a consistent point of view, organizing thoughts logically, and providing sufficient, detailed information to support the point. Students will learn how to identify sentence elements and combine these elements to create clearly stated sentences with variety in structure. In addition to the classroom instruction, this class is also a HYBRID class, which means students will need to meet on campus on Thursday 2/8, 3/15, 4/26, and 5/17 from 4:3.0 to 6:50 PM in D-206.

Textbook Information:

  • Hacker, Bedford Handbook, 10th, 9781457683039
  • Mims, Mirror on America, 5th, 9780312667658
  • Jimenez, Breaking Through, 9780618342488

Online Ground Rules:

  1. Treat all students’ contributions with respect, even if you disagree with the statements. Understand that diverse opinions create interesting dynamics for the course.
  2. Be patient with the technology used in this class. If something is not working, do not panic. E-mail me and I will try to help you as soon as possible.
  3. Ask for help from me or your classmates when you need it, and offer to help your fellow classmates.
Understand that virtual communications are usually taken at face value; there-fore, jokes and sarcasm rarely translate well to other readers and contributors.
  4. Post thought-provoking discussion responses that include examples and evidence or support to prove your point. Avoid responding with an unsupported opinion or just agreeing with the post.
  5. Cite your sources – whether it is an online article or another classmate’s post in all your written work.

Student Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to read critically for literal meaning and identify the main idea of a reading and the author's writing strategies as well as summarize and paraphrase effectively.
  • Students will use the writing process to write, in proper MLA format, essays, including a documented paper, using appropriately chosen details, organizational strategies, sentence variety, and sufficiently correct grammar and punctuation.
  • Students will ethically integrate and document source material.

Class Learning Objectives:

  • As a class, students will work on responding critically to the main ideas in the readings and editing and revising student multiple essays.
  • All of the class discussions and writing assignments will require college level concepts, vocabulary, and learning skill
