Course Description:
Spanish 101 employs a proficiency-oriented, task-based approach, designed to develop basic oral communicative abilities in Spanish. In order to support these abilities, you will also be introduced to advanced beginning grammar as well as speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Student Learning Outcomes:
*Communicate effectively in Spanish at the advanced beginning level while using appropriate vocabulary and
applying grammatical structures correctly.
* Listen for familiar vocabulary to infer meaning in small and large groups and use appropriate pronunciation on a
variety of topics.
Textbooks (required)
Puntos de Partida with Connect PLUS Vol. 1, 10th Edition by Marty Knorre et al., find at your bookstore. You must have your books at all times. You will not be allowed in the classroom without your textbook; laptop or notepad with E-book. You may not use your cell phones to access your E-books.
**Please Note: Copyright laws and District policy prohibit professors from accepting any photocopied work from course textbooks. All texts may be purchased or rented at the campus bookstore.
Additional Material (recommended/required) 1) A good Spanish/English Dictionary (Recommended) 2) A verb conjugation book like (501 Verbs) (Recommended) 3) Connect Workbook/Lab-manual & Learn Smart Activities (Required) (It is recommended but not required to complete your Connect exercises at the SAC Learning Center (Johnson Center, U-202). 4) Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) (Required) Students must register for the Learning Center during the first week of classes prior to attending the Learning Center. Students must login using the following link and fill out the online registration form: https://www.sac.edu/rsccdasp/secureforms/Learning-Center-Referral-Form.asp. Students are required to complete three DLAs in the SAC Learning Center in U-202 in order to succeed in the course. You may work on your DLAs at anytime that the center is open, but you must meet with a tutor to review your work. Please review availability for tutors at the center and plan accordingly. You will only get credit for your DLAs if they have been reviewed and signed by a tutor by their corresponding deadlines. Learning Center activities must be completed by the dates provided on the Day-by day Calendar.
Text Material Covered Spanish 101: Chapters 1-8. Please refer to the Day-by-Day schedule.
Class Dynamics:
I will attempt to balance a relaxed atmosphere where students will be willing to use Spanish without fear of criticism, with the need for academic excellence. Try, however, not to get as comfortable with the class as to not study enough; some anxiety about academic performance is always helpful. On the other hand, avoid getting so tense that you “freeze up”. Please avoid monopolizing the class or creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for your classmates.
Written and Oral Assignments: These assignments are part of the course and consist of materials assigned to be completed outside of the classroom such as your lab work, exercises from the textbook, oral presentations, etc. Homework will be checked in class and collected at random. If you miss a day, please turn in your homework for the missed day on the next day you attend, at the very beginning of the class session. (You may place your homework on my desk before I begin my lecture for the day.) Failure to complete any given assignment to my satisfaction will result in your course grade being lowered. If you have to be absent, you are expected to call a classmate to find out the assignment for the next day so that you won’t fall behind. No late assignments will be accepted. (Don’t be late. You will not be able to turn-in your assignment if it has already been collected). Please note that in order to receive credit for your assignments, your work must always be stapled together and must include your name, date, title of assignment and page number. No exceptions!

Requirements:
- a) Attendance: Class attendance is mandatory. Regular class attendance is expected and essential for successful completion of the course. In order to be considered present, the student must be in attendance for the ENTIRE class period. You are allowed only two absences per course. For each absence beyond the second one, your course grade will be lowered by 0 percent per day. I will count two “tardies” as one absence. Medical and court emergencies will be excused ONLY when you present me with an original written document proving that YOU were there during class hours.
**A student may be dropped for excessive absences. Absences are “excessive” when the total number of class hours missed exceeds 10% of the total number of scheduled hours for the class over the semester (3 classes). **Please note: It is the responsibility of the student to officially withdraw from a course. Failure to do so will result in an “F” at the end of the semester. Please see your SAC catalogue for more information.
b) Participation Policy: In order to participate, you must be present. Roll will be taken every day. Class participation includes your contribution, in Spanish, during regular class sessions, as well as in small group activities. You are expected to study all of the vocabulary and grammar points at home, before class, so that the limited class time can be spent on collective practice and reinforcement of the language rather than mere lecturing. If you are in class but unprepared, do not participate, or are doing other things not related to the course such as text messaging, answering your cell phone, talking or listening to your radio, your course grade will be lowered by 1.0 percent per incident and you will receive a zero on everything for the day.
- c) Connect Assignments: (Workbook/Lab-manual & Learn Smart Activities): Connect Assignments: Students may work on all Connect assignments from any computer that has access to the Internet. It is recommended to use the latest Firefox/Chrome and Adobe tools. Do not use Explorer. You may download these tools free of charge. Your instructor will be able to monitor the time that you spend on all Connect assignments at all times.
In order to use Connect online, you would need to create a username and password at the link below. You will only have access when you purchase a textbook with a corresponding code access number. Enter the corresponding information and then go to the link provided.
You will have to complete the exercises assigned before the due date, indicated under each assignment. Your grade for this category will depend on the grades you obtain for these assignments so take these assignments seriously and take your time to complete them. Please listen to each section at least twice for pronunciation, clarification and corrections. You will only receive credit for completed assignments on time.
Students may also complete their Lab/Connect assignments at the SAC Learning Center in U-202. If you do attend the lab in U-202, you must check in and out by using your student ID number and a picture ID. In the lab you are responsible for completing all of the Connect exercises assigned by your instructor. Please do not share your answers or you will receive an F per assignment and will be reported for plagiarism.
**Please Note: You are to have the chapters that you will be tested on completed by the exam date (This is for the Connect Workbook/Lab-manual Activities). Please check your Day-by-day calendar for submission deadlines.
- d) Writing Samples: Students will develop a series of journal topics/writing samples throughout the semester. The topic and length of each entry will be assigned in class. They will be graded for both grammar and content. No late assignments will be accepted. If you are going to be absent, make sure that I have your writing sample before the class begins. You may send it to me as an attachment before the deadline, if you are unable to make it to class. No exceptions!
- e) Exams: You will have 3 exams. They will test reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written expression. There are NO MAKE-UPS for exams or quizzes. If you missed an exam/quiz because you were late, you will not be allowed to make it up at any other time. You will take all exams/quizzes in class. Please refer to your Day-by-day calendar for more information about the chapters that will be tested and the dates of examination. Please note that quizzes may be given any time and may cover material studied up to that date.
- f) Oral Expression: Towards the end of the semester, your oral proficiency will be evaluated on the basis of a presentation/dialogue by a small group skit. Details will be announced further along in the session. You will have many “mini” individual presentations to prepare you for this final oral project. The more you participate in the class, the better you will do on your final oral presentation.
g) Final Exam: You will have a cumulative multiple-choice Final Exam. Students are to bring a scantron (100AS) and a number two pencil on the day of the exam. The Exam will cover Chapters 1 –8.
Class Decorum: *Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Read the catalogue regarding the District’s definition of plagiarism, its policy regarding it, and the severe consequences that come with acts of academic dishonesty, including the possibility of receiving an F in a class and being suspended/expelled from the college. Make sure that you submit your OWN work and documents at all times.
*Disrespectful and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and will have detrimental consequences on your performance in the class. I will give the student only one warning. If misbehavior persists, the student will be removed from the classroom and will be required to speak to me before being given permission to attend our next class session. Alternatively, the student may be sent to our Division Dean or the Dean of Student Affairs to discuss his or her misconduct before being allowed to return to class. Please review the student code of conduct found in the RSCCD catalogue for more information.
*Please turn off all electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers, alarm clocks, radios, IPOD’s and hand-held game systems (PlayStation Portable/Game Boy, etc) before entering the classroom. (Only authorized devices will be allowed such as a laptop and/or a tablet for viewing your textbook). These devices generally distract from a positive learning environment and, in some instances, provide students with the invitation and the means to cheat. You are enrolled in a serious college course that requires your full cooperation and attention. If you do use any electronic device during class-time, you will receive a zero on everything for that day, including midterms/presentations/final exam, etc. and may be suspended for the day. If you need to have your phone on during class time due to an emergency, notify me prior to the beginning of class and silence your phone. When your call comes in, please take it outside and away from the classroom.
*Only registered students are allowed in the classroom. Therefore, do not bring friends, relatives, pets, children, or miscellaneous other companions to class.
Students are not permitted to bring ANY food, gum or liquids (other than water) into the classroom. If you bring water, make sure that it is in a spill-proof container and keep it inside of your school bag. Failure to follow this regulation will result in a zero for the day.
**Grading Policy: Your course grade will be weighted in the following way: Exams (3) 25%
Journals 10% Class Participation 10% Connect /Lab Assignments/DLA Activities 15% Final Presentation 15%
Final Exam 25%
**The following scale will be used to determine your grade in the course. A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F below 60%
