Course Description: 

A critical analysis of American history.  Includes industrial and technological developments, the changing nature of society, cultural developments, domestic politics, and America's expanded world role.

Textbook Information: 

Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!: An American History, Vol. 2 Brief 5th Edition (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2017).  ISBN: 978-0-393-61416-9

Course Learning Objectives: 

  1. Learn History: Students will learn a general understanding of United States history through trained historians, while examining primary sources, to formulate deeper opinions and knowledge of important historical people, groups, and events.
  2. Learn Culture: Students will learn about American society and its diverse culture. An understanding of the diverse and complex American culture will help students draw connections to their own cultural identity and to respect others.
  3. Develop Academic Skills: The course readings, exams, and class discussions will develop the students’ reading, analytical, discussion, writing, and critical thinking skills. The development of these skills will be crucial for students preparing to enter the workforce and university system.


Student Learning Objectives: 

  1. Students will critically analyze and interpret primary documents and secondary sources, and will be able to interpret qualitative and quantitative data in order to evaluate historical events.
  2. Students will develop communication skills through oral and written exercises, and develop analytical skills by critically interpreting historical topics.
  3. Students will analyze how local, national, and international policies and practices developed in the past continue to impact their contemporary lives.
