Course Description:
Vietnamese 101 is an elementary course focusing on pronunciation and grammar, basic vocabulary, common expressions, listening, speaking, reading and writing simple Vietnamese sentences. In other words, students are expected to acquire aural and oral skills with distinction of linguistic features, especially the tones, of the Vietnamese language. They are also expected to be able to read short paragraphs from textbooks or selected clips from newspapers or magazines whose terms are within the corpus vocabulary, and to acquire the ability of writing simple sentences frequently used in conversations, in notes or personal letters. These four skills will enable students to endear themselves with some knowledge of present Vietnamese culture. These goals will be enhanced through in-class discussions as well as supplementary materials brought in by the instructor and reinforced with laboratory assignments.

Attendance: Regular attendance is mandatory. Students are supposed to attend class regularly. Students will receive a warning if they have two weeks (ten hours) for excessive absences. Absences beyond two will not be excused unless presentation of a doctor’s note or other kinds of evidence for activities that are deemed by the instructor as indispensable. For each unexcused absence, 3 points will be taken off of the total points for attendance. In case the class has break(s), students are not allowed to skip class during break. Leaving after the break is considered an absence for the whole class meeting.

- write basic descriptive paragraphs with clear topic sentences and supporting detail.
- analyze reading segments on a diverse number of cultural topics.

- engage in discussions about creative and artistic ideas.
- review and improve usage of appropriate grammatical points which include advanced vocabulary, term meaning, and regional usage of common lexicon.
