 Hi!  My name is Suzanne Freeman, FPG.  I am a Professor (and Dept. Chair) of Fire Technology at Santa Ana College (SAC).   The FPG stands for Fire Prevention Geek.

I began my career with the fire service in 1987. Professionally, I served as a Fire Protection Analyst for the City of Costa Mesa. Other assignments included Fire Protection Specialist, Fire Education Specialist and Pubic Information Officer.

Today, I teach a wide range of pre-service courses including: Introduction to Fire Protection; Fire Behavior, Fire Protection Systems and Equipment and Fire Prevention Technology. I also teach the advanced OSFM classes: Fire Inspector (Levels 1 & 2); Fire Prevention 3A and 3B and Public Education.

I am a frequent speaker at both Education and Fire Service related conferences. Past conferences have included: On-Course National Conference; NFPA Fire & Safety Expo Mexico City, Mexico; CA Fire Prevention Officers Workshop; NFPA World Conference; Fire Rescue West; American Association of Higher Education National Conference; California Fire Chiefs Conference.

Course Description:  

Units: 3. Hours: 3 Lecture Prerequisite: Fire T.echnology 101 & 102

Organization and function of fire prevention; inspection; surveying and mapping procedures; recognition of fire and life hazards; engineering a solution to a fire hazard; enforcing solutions to a fire hazard; public relations as effected by fire prevention

Course Learning Objectives: 

Students completing this course will be able to understand the community risk reduction duties and responsibilities of Firefirefighter I and Inspector I positions. 

In keeping with the mission of Santa Ana College, students completing this course can expect to be inspired, transformed and empowered as follows:

  • Inspired: Students will be inspired to identify hazards and share stories with horrible endings (but important safety messages) outside of the class. Friends and family will be amazed.

 

  • Transformed: Students will be able to analyze the conditions of a typical fire prevention scenario, identify appropriate action, anticipate related legal aspects and justify recommendations orally and in writing. Students are transformed into desireable candidates for entry level jobs or internships when they learn how to do the job (and articulate it!) the right way. Friends and family will be annoyed.

 

  • Empowered: Students become empowered to explore career or academic opportunities in related fields,accept personal and professional responsibility for maintaining safe environments, communicate risk and mitigation methods with others, take a leadership role to protect others.use ethical decision making skills to do the right thing. Just pretend not to notice when family and friends roll their eyes.

Student Learning Objectives:  

At the conclusion of the course, students shall be able to:

  • Describe the national fire problem and functions of fire prevention organizations and associations.
  • Identify the minimum professional qualifications at the local, state and national level for fire prevention employment opportunities.
  • Identify the model codes, standards, and regulations related to fire prevention. 
  • Describe inspection practices, procedures and methods of fire and life safety education
