Course Description:
This is a practical, “hands on “course, which is student-driven, and helps students learn the skills to research and develop educational and career plans to assist in achieving both short and long term goals. The purpose of this course is to assess and apply personality traits, characteristics, values, skills, and interests with career and life planning. We will focus on interpersonal development as it relates to career and life goals.
Course Objectives: It is expected that through the student’s active participation, the following should emerge and develop:
- Personal Awareness – Gain a better understanding of yourself and the environment around you
- Personal Exploration – Understand the variables which affect life choices and success
- Career Exploration – Understand and integrate information about yourself with the world of work
- Career Goals – Identify and develop goals on the basis of occupational preferences and values
- Career Planning – Develop a career plan to achieve individual goals
Required Textbook and Materials:
- Career Fitness Program Textbook, 10th, Author: Sukiennik, Bendat, and Raufman
- Career assessment instruments ($18.50 for MBTI and STRONG processing fee)
- 1 inch or 1½ inch three ring binder with 8 dividers/tabs. The dividers should be labeled as follows:
Course Expectation:
Your class participation is welcomed, valued and required; it is the foundation of this course. Students are expected to:
- Attend every class, arrive on time, and stay the entire session.
- Read the assigned textbook chapters and complete any assignments before coming to class.
- Respect the instructor and your peers’ by actively listening, staying engaged in class and treating the personal issues and feelings of others with the utmost respect.
- Avoid excessive talking during lecture and don’t use group time as free talk time.
- Be open-minded and accept diversity by respecting the ideas, views and beliefs of those who think differently from you.
Course Policies and Procedures:
All homework assignments are DUE at the BEGINNING of class on the assigned due date. Late assignments will NOT be accepted.
- If you are absent, your assignment is still DUE by 11:30am for each class session. Submit your assignment to me via email card_govela_peggy@sac.edu
- Not having your assignment turned in on time due to technical difficulties is not an excuse for missing and/or for late assignments.
- If you are late to class, it is your responsibility to get missed assignments or handouts. If you are absent you can get missed assignments or handouts from via BLACKBAORD.
- You are expected to problem-solve with the instructor if you experience anything outside the class that is hindering or preventing you from doing well in this course.
Attendance and Participation:
Many assignments involve in-class activities, group work and cannot be made up; therefore, regular attendance and participation is both encouraged and mandatory. To encourage attendance, I will take roll during class. Absences of 2 class sessions may result in the student being dropped. If you decide to drop the course OR decide to stop attending, it is your responsibility to officially withdraw from the course to avoid an “F” grade. ***Feb 18, 2018 is the last day to drop without a “W”.
Cell Phone/Electronic Devices Policy:
All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and put away during class time. If you need to use your phone at any time, please step outside.

Grading:
You will be graded based on the completion and performance of the all assignments. Assignments will be graded on promptness, completeness, and legibility. Participation and attendance will be part of your grade as well as we do class activities which cannot be made up.
