Course Description: Medical insurance billing and coding is a basic course designed to develop an understanding of the basic types of medical insurance programs available in today’s healthcare system. It also acquaints students with billing formats using the universal claim form and provides the skills necessary to code diagnoses (ICD-10) and procedures (CPT) and to master the basic aspects of medical insurance billing.

1) Fordney, Marilyn, Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office, 14th Edition, Saunders, Philadelphia, 2017.
2) Fordney, Marilyn, Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office--Workbook, 14th Edition, Saunders, Philadelphia, 2017. (1. and 2. are sold together as a “bundle”)
3) American Medical Association, Current Procedural Terminology, Atlanta (2012-2017 used CPT books are acceptable for Unit#3, Chapter 6, Procedural Coding)
Course Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate understanding of professional responsibilities, privacy and medical-legal issues of a medical insurance billing specialist regarding basic insurance programs and contracts.
- Provide knowledge of insurance programs, billing and coding concepts and how to accurately complete insurance forms and assignments.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Comprehend professional responsibilities and medical-legal issues of a medical insurance billing specialist regarding basic insurance programs and contracts, private insurance, managed care, Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, workers' compensation, and disability programs.
- Implement knowledge of diagnostic and procedural coding, third party payer billing procedures, accurate completion of the CMS-1500 claim form and insurance problem-solving techniques.
