Meet Your Instructor: Monica Zarske
Education: I was hired in the Fall of 2005, as a full-time faculty member assuming the roles of Professor and Coordinator of the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program. I received a B.A. in Communicative Disorders, a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State University. Prior to coming to Santa Ana College, I was employed as a Speech-Language Pathologist for 12 years with experience working across a variety of settings: hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, school districts and in-home therapy consultations . My personal areas of interest are in early intervention and bilingual/ multicultural issues as it pertains to clients.
I hold the Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, in addition to California State Licensure. I am also a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the California Speech-Language Hearing Association (CSHA).

Course Description: Overview of the field of speech-language pathology, professional standards, legal and ethical issues and scope of responsibilities of the speech-language pathologist and the speech-language pathology assistant in health care and educational settings.

Course Learning Objectives:
Following completion of this course, you the student will:
1. be able to identify and differentiate the duties of a licensed speech language pathology assistant as compared to a licensed speech language pathologist.

be able to identify the qualifications that are required to practice as a speech language pathology assistant in the state of California.
3. be able to identify the duties within and outside of the scope of practice of a speech language pathology assistant. -
be able to analyze the legal and professional requirements in the field of speech-language pathology as it pertains to the certification and training of speech-language pathology assistants in the state of California.
5. be able to define a variety of different types of communication disorders.
6. be able to identify psychological impacts for someone who has a communication disorder.
7. be able to identify the types of settings in which a speech language pathology assistant may work.
8. be able to identify the basic characteristics and traits needed by the speech-language pathology assistant and how these can be used to assist individual's in overcoming a communication disorder.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Identify the laws and policies regulating the SLPA field.
- Label, identify and define basic terminology and concepts that pertain to the field of speech pathology assisting.
