Course Description: This course addresses the relationship between critical reading and critical thinking, including emphasis on the development of critical reading and thinking skills that facilitate the interpretation, analysis, criticism, and advocacy of ideas encountered in academic reading.

Course Learning Objectives:
- Write argumentative and persuasive essays; write an analysis of an argument.
- Identify components of arguments. (issue, claim, support, refutation)
- Recognize bias.
- Analyze arguments: identify argument and supporting evidence.
- Evaluate arguments: identify types of evidence and assess its accuracy.
- Identify propaganda techniques. (Plain folks, name calling).
- Recognize errors in reasoning. (Bandwagon, straw man, etc.)
Student Learning Objectives:
Through this course you will:
demonstrate an understanding of critical reading skills and recognize tone, purpose, bias, etc.
write argumentative and persuasive essays
identify components of arguments
analyze and evaluate arguments--identify argument and types of supporting evidence, and assess its accuracy
identify propaganda techniques and recognize errors in reasoning
research, analyze and evaluate information from the internet
