Course Description: 

This course further describes the concepts within the four domains of Person, Health and Illness, Environment, and Nursing. Emphasis is placed on the concepts within each domain including: physical growth, psychosocial, and cognitive development, metabolism, cellular regulation, perfusion, reproduction, infection, comfort, emergencies, safety and infection control, diversity, health promotion, communication, professional behaviors, clinical reasoning/judgement, ethics, and clinical competency. Upon completion, students should be able to identify safe nursing care incorporating the concepts discussed in this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES for NRN 164/164L

Careers, Civic Responsibility & Diversity  The student nurse will evaluate accountability and responsibility for nursing practice, employing professionalism in the role of the Registered Nurse. This student learning outcome is achieved by completing the following objectives:

  1. Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for increasing complex patient care implementations within appropriate legal and ethical parameters.        
  2. Use appropriate behaviors of the Associate Degree Nursing student with increasing understanding of professional role progression.
  3. Demonstrate actions appropriate to the nurse’s role as patient advocate.

Communication & Information Management

The student nurse will compare communication skills and technology to support decision making, education, and documentation of care.

This student learning outcome is achieved by completing the following objectives:      

1. Employ effective verbal and non-verbal therapeutic communication.                

2. Demonstrate a simple health teaching plan that provides for prevention, maintenance, and rehabilitation. 

Thinking/Reasoning & Life Skills The student nurse will compare the nursing process and best current evidence to provide safe care while advocating for patients and families across the lifespan. This student learning outcome is achieved by completing the following objectives:

  1. Apply concepts of the nursing process while integrating environmental, cultural, spiritual and psychosocial influences.
  2. Relate relevant theoretical concepts to patient care.
  3. Apply appropriate patient care implementations under supervision of the instructor or licensed nurse.
