Meet Your Instructor: 

Instructor Winkle has taught courses for the Communication Studies, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant and Disabled Students Programs and Services Departments at Santa Ana College for more than 15 years.  She finds it very rewarding, both personally and professionally, to see students’ improvement in communication skills as the semester progresses. Students have the opportunity to practice newly learned listening and speaking skills in every class.  Her goal is to help students reach their potential in the area of speech/language skills for “Life is a promise; fulfill it” (Mother Theresa).

Currently, Instructor Winkle also works part-time as a speech pathologist in the school system and supervises speech-language pathology assistants and speech pathologists who are earning their license and/or ASHA certification. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Diego State University and Masters of Arts Degree from California State University, Fullerton.  In addition to her license as a Speech-Language Pathologist and Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential in Language, Speech and Hearing with the state of CA, she also has a Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

 Catalogue Course Description: 

This class is a beginning course for non-native students with previous instruction in basic English as a second language. Students participate in discrimination, pronunciation, speaking and listening skill building activities. Skills are intensively practiced and reviewed.   There are no prerequisite courses at Santa Ana College for this class.  Not applicable to an associate degree. 

Note:  Listening and speaking skills in English will be practiced during each class.  Throughout the course, students will participate in small group acticivites and oral presentations given informally and formally in class.

Textbook Information: 

Required Text:  Thrush, Emily Austin, Baldwin, Robert and Blass, Laurie. Interactions Access Listening/Speaking. New York: McGraw-Hill, latest edition with e-course.  Print.  ISBN # 978-0-07-339954-6.  A new book is highly recommended.  Used books do not have the red registration card needed for access to the e-course activities/homework.  

 Student Learning Objectives:  

  • utilize more accurate pronunciation of letters, numbers, syllables, stress in words and some American English speech sounds.  
  • analyze the differences between long vs. short vowel sounds and stop vs. continuant consonant sounds in American English.  
  • model basic conversation skills for understanding and responding to directions/questions; asking for/giving information; describing a person, place, or event; expressing an opinion; telling about future plans, etc.
