Meet Your Instructor:
Instructor Winkle has taught courses for the Communication Studies, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant and Disabled Students Programs and Services Departments at Santa Ana College for more than 15 years. She finds it very rewarding, both personally and professionally, to see students’ improvement in communication skills as the semester progresses. Students have the opportunity to practice newly learned listening and speaking skills in every class. Her goal is to help students reach their potential in the area of speech/language skills for “Life is a promise; fulfill it” (Mother Theresa).
Currently, Instructor Winkle also works part-time as a speech pathologist in the school system and supervises speech-language pathology assistants and speech pathologists who are earning their license and/or ASHA certification. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Diego State University and Masters of Arts Degree from California State University, Fullerton. In addition to her license as a Speech-Language Pathologist and Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential in Language, Speech and Hearing with the state of CA, she also has a Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Course Description:
Communication Studies 170 Introduction to Phonetics Unit(s): 3.0 Class Hours: 48 Lecture total. Study of the articulatory foundations of the description and classification of speech sounds. Introduces the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), physiological properties of the speech-producing mechanism, and methods of transcription. Emphasis will be on American English along with comparison to the sound systems of other languages. Communication Studies N53 recommended for non-native speakers. CSU

Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will identify and describe the physical production of speech sounds
represented by phonetic or phonemic transcription - Students will convert phonetic or phonemic transcriptions of variants of English to
a conventional orthographic transcript - Students will produce a written phonemic or phonetic transcription from both live
and recorded speech segments using the International Phonetic Alphabet - Students will identify, describe and transcribe variants of speech production
coming from idiosyncratic, non-native interference, speech disorders, dialectical
or phonological patterns
