Required Materials: Text: Living with Art - 11th Edition, Author: Getlein, Mark (2013).
ISBN 978-0-07-337931-9
Class Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to take detailed notes of the material presented in class, as lecture material is often not included in the textbook. Students should bring their textbook, notebook, pencil, and this syllabus to each class meeting. Assigned readings should be read before the class for which they are assigned, as class discussion is encouraged. If you must miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining make-up lecture notes from a classmate. Attendance will be taken from vocabulary assignments – turned in at the start of each class, no exceptions.
“It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw officially from a course. However, because of enrollment demand a student may be dropped by the instructor when not appearing at the first class meeting. A student may be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absences exceed 10% of the total, scheduled hours of the class.”-Santa Ana College Catalog
Class Participation: Not only are students expected to attend class, they are also expected to actively participate. This means bringing required materials to class and taking notes. This also means reading the course textbook and handouts in order to participate in class discussions and class activities. Finally, as part of your participation grade we will have some time devoted to in-class writing.
Exams: There will be 3 non-cumulative exams during the semester. Information regarding exam format and sample questions will be discussed prior to each exam. Make-up exams will only be allowed in the case of a documented school-sponsored schedule conflict, a documented illness or a documented emergency. The format of make-up exams is at the discretion of the instructor, which can range from multiple page essays to a re-worked and more rigorous exam.
Museum/Gallery Critique: There will be one two-page (typed and double-spaced) critiques based on a visit to a local museum or gallery to be completed during the semester. Detailed instructions regarding the museum/gallery critique will be posted in Blackboard and discussed within the first few weeks of class.
Extra Credit Opportunity/ Book Project: There is an extra credit opportunity worth up to 15 points. For students to achieve this they must read a book written by or about an artist (i.e. “The Artist’s Reality,” By Mark Rothko). Selections must be approved by the teacher and an 800-word critical summary of the book will be due the week of Finals. This project cannot be substituted for the Gallery Critique; the Gallery Critique must be turned in before or with the Book Project.

Academic dishonesty is seen as an intentional act of fraud, in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization, or uses unauthorized materials or fabricated information in any academic exercise. As institutions, we also consider academic dishonesty to include forgery of academic documents, intentionally impeding or damaging the academic work of others, assisting other students in acts of dishonesty or coercing students into acts of dishonesty.
