COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to fundamental principles and practices of circuit training including: safety, using cardiovascular equipment, and resistance machines and components of exercise. This course provides the basics of a comprehensive exercise program.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Students will be able to choose and monitor appropriate intensity levels and cardiovascular fitness.
- Students will participate in physical and mental fitness skills that will promote positive lifetime health benefits.
- Students will be competent in developing skills and knowledge to make adjustments for better strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Apply beginning level circuit training techniques
- Identify and list circuit training machines and accessory equipment.
- Label the 8 major muscle groups.
- Act, interact, and react to others with appropriate fitness center etiquette and safety behaviors.
- Compare and contrast types of circuit training.
GRADING:
- 30 class meetings x 5 points= 150 points
- 3 exercise testing x 20 points=60 points
- 4 Assignments x 15 points= 60 points
- Mid-term/Final Exam x 30 points=60 points
COURSE INFORMATION:
- The instructor of this class reserves the right to request a student enroll in another class and/or activity if this class proves too difficult or if the student’s safety is in jeopardy because of their skill/fitness level.
- The following physical fitness course (Circuit Training) may involve strenuous exercise and may cause bodily injury. All participants should be in good physical condition. A medical examination is suggested prior to any strenuous physical activity.
- Non-enrolled students are not permitted to use the facility or wait in the classroom for a friend to finish his or her workout. CHILDREN ARE NOT ALLOWED.
- Cell phones should be turned off in the classroom.
- Shower facilities and lockers are available. Students must supply their own combination lock.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: All Students are required to attend class on a regular basis. 5 Points will be given to students on a daily basis for meeting the following requirements.
- Attending class ON TIME.
- Staying the allotted time period.
- Participation.
- Demonstrate correctly written documentation of your workout.
- You must be an active participant for at least 75% of the class time.
CLASS ATTIRE:
- Appropriate workout attireMUST be worn at all times. Shoes are required. Tennis, jogging, gym or aerobic shoes are all acceptable. A T-shirt, WITH SLEEVES, is required. The T-shirt needs to be long enough to cover your mid-section even with your arms raised over your head. Tank tops, halter-tops, or half-shirts are not allowed. Shorts or long warm-up pants are acceptable as long as they are not offensive. Clothing with belts and/or zippers are not allowed (NO JEANS).
- EACH STUDENT MUST HAVE A TOWEL. WHEN USING THE FITNESS CENTER. STUDENTS NOT HAVING A TOWEL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE. THE TOWEL WILL BE USED TO WIPE OFF THE UPHOLSTERY AS YOU LEAVE EACH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AND TO PLACE BETWEEN YOU AND THE EQUIPMENT TO KEEP THE MACHINES AS DRY AND CLEAN AS POSSIBLE.
ATTENDANCE:
Please e-mail or call if you are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw officially from a course. However, a student may be dropped by the instructor when not appearing at the first class meeting. Regular attendance is required. A student may also be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absence exceed 10% of the total scheduled hours of the class. Under extenuating circumstances, a student may be reinstated by the instructor.
WORKOUT PROCEDURES:
- Carry your workout card with you from station to station. You may choose to record before or after completing the circuit. Carrying your card is mandatory!
- Begin the circuit going in numerical order. You may start at any station as long as you work in numerical order. Finish at the station before the one you started. Example: If you begin on station 5, end on station 4. DO NOT GO BACKWARDS.
- Do 10-12 repetitions at each station. Return weights slowly to the starting position without banging them. Read the chart at each station for specific information on each exercise.
- It is mandatory to keep up with the tape recording. When the voice prompt says ‘STOP AND ROTATE’ you must move to the next weight station.
- At the end of class return your workout card to your instructor or the box on the counter.
