COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to fundamental prin­ciples and practices of circuit training in­cluding: safety, using cardiovascular and resistance machines, and components of exercise. This course provides the basics of a comprehensive exercise program that combines cardiovascular exercises with strength training.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate competence in Circuit training techniques.
  2.  Apply the FITT principle to circuit training for health benefits and lifelong learning.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Apply beginning/intermediate/advance level circuit training techniques.
  2. Identify and name circuit training machines and other exercises.
  3. Recognize fundamental principles and terminology of physical fitness.
  4. Compare & contrast types of circuit training.
  5. Label the major muscle groups and indicate the primary mover associated with basic strength training exercises.
  6. Express the relationship between circuit training and the components health-related fitness.
  7. Act, interact, and react to others with appropriate fitness center etiquette and safety behaviors.

 

cOURSE INFORMATION:

  • The instructor of this class reserves the right to request a student enroll in another class and/or activity if this class proves too difficult or if the student’s safety is in jeopardy because of their skill/fitness level.
  • This class may involve strenuous exercise and may cause bodily injury. All participants should be in good physical condition. A medical examination is suggested prior to any strenuous physical activity.
  • Non-enrolled students are not permitted in the classroom. CHILDREN ARE NOT ALLOWED.
  • Cell phones should be turned off in the classroom.
  • Shower facilities and lockers are available. Students must supply their own combination lock.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/GRADING:

All Students are required to attend class on a regular basis. 5 Points will be given to students on a daily basis for meeting the following requirements.

  1. Attending class ON TIME.
  2. Staying the allotted time period.
  3. Participation.
  4. Demonstrate correctly written documentation of your workout.
  5. You must be an active participant for at least 75% of the class time.

 

 

COURSE GRADING:

32 class meetings x 5 points = 160 points                        

Tests (3) = 60 points total                                                            

Target Heart Rate Assignment = 10 points

Personal 5 Day Fitness Plan (FITT) = 10 points              

Fitness Final = 10 points                                                                          

Total Points = 250             Scale:  A=90%-100%    C=70%-79%            F=59% and below

                                                         B=80%-89%       D=60%-69%

                                                                     

Personal 5 Day Fitness Plan (10 points):  Students will identify in writing a fitness plan/workout using FITT)..  Intermediate students are expected to score between Good and Excellent on all rubrics and advance students are expected to score Excellent on all rubrics

Target Heart Rate Assignment (5 points): 60 to 80% of your maximum heart rate is the range each person should work to improve the heart and cardiovascular systems’ ability to circulate blood. See blackboard for example.                                                                                           

CLASS ATTIRE:

Appropriate workout attire MUST be worn at all times. Tennis, jogging, gym or aerobic shoes are required.  A T-shirt, WITH SLEEVES, is required. The T-shirt needs to be long enough to cover your mid-section even with your arms raised over your head. Tank tops, halter-tops, or half-shirts are not allowed. Workout shorts or sweats without metal or scratchy adornments are required.  Clothing with belts and/or zippers are not allowed (NO JEANS). Clothing should allow freedom of movement.

EACH STUDENT MUST BRING A WORKOUT TOWEL (not a washcloth) TO CLASS.  STUDENTS NOT HAVING A TOWEL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE.  THE TOWEL WILL BE USED TO WIPE OFF THE UPHOLSTERY AS YOU LEAVE EACH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AND TO PLACE BETWEEN YOU AND THE EQUIPMENT TO KEEP THE MACHINES AS DRY AND CLEAN AS POSSIBLE.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is mandated by the state.  A student may be administratively dropped from class upon accumulating more than 3 absences; so don’t miss. An absence is considered excused if it meets one of the College’s sanctioned reasons (personal illness, death of an immediate family member, or a College sponsored event).  If a conflict arises, simply contact me by phone (714-564-6922) or email (macdonald_juli@sac.edu) prior to the start of class and you will find that I am understanding and willing to work with you.  In the event of an absence, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from classmates and complete missed assignments.   Noteworthy:

  1. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer participating.
  2. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending.
  1. It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline.

 

WORKOUT PROCEDURES:

  1. Carry your workout card with you from station to station.  You may choose to record during or after completing the circuit.  Carrying your card is mandatory!  
  2. Begin the circuit going in numerical order.  You may start at any station as long as you work in numerical order.  Finish at the station before the one you started.  Example:  If you begin on station 5, end on station 4.  DO NOT GO BACKWARDS.
  3. Do 10-12 repetitions at each station.  Return weights slowly to the starting position without banging them.  Read the chart at each station for specific information on each exercise.
  4. It is mandatory to keep up with the tape recording. When the voice prompt says ‘STOP AND ROTATE’ you must move to the next weight station.
  5. At the end of class return your workout card to your instructor or the box on the counter.
