Course Description:  Basic concepts of matter, atomic structure, formulas, equation writing, nomenclature, gases and kinetic theory. Emphasizes properties of solutions and the mole concept in quantitative chemistry. Prepares students for Biology and Chemistry 219.

Course Learning Objectives:  Chemistry 209 is a beginning course in chemistry to introduce you to the fundamental principles of general chemistry. Basic concepts of matter including atomic structure, formulas, equation writing, nomenclature, gases and kinetic theory will be discussed. It will also emphasize properties of solutions and the mole concept in quantitative chemistry. The course prepares students for Biology and Chemistry 219. No previous chemistry courses are expected or assumed.

Students will become competent in the basic of chemistry in preparation for enrollment in General Chemistry. During the course of gaining this competence, students will also accomplish the following learning outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content by exam periodically throughout the semester.
  • Students will be able to provide clear and concise written and/or oral explanations of chemical concepts using appropriate scientific language and writing style by exam and/or presentation.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety, be able to show familiarity with basic lab equipment, and employ proper laboratory technique in the successful completion of laboratory experiments.
