Course Description

Theory of operation, diagnosis, and service of drum, disc, and anti-lock brake systems used on modern vehicles. Safe and correct hands-on practice is emphasized. Students must furnish approved safety glasses. This course assists the student in preparation for the A5 (Brakes) ASE certification exam.

 

Class Hours

This class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 10:05pm.  Students are expected to arrive on time and stay until the completion of the class, including shop cleanup.

 

Attendance and Participation

The Student receives three (3) points for each day the student attends class. If the students is late to class the student loses one (1) point. If the student leaves early the student loses one (1) point. Participation is also part of your grade.

Automotive Technology 5th Edition  

Authors; James D. Halderman

 

Recommended: Laptop, iPad, Kindle, etc..to gain access to SAC Blackboard

 

Supplies

Notebook with (5) dividers, note book paper and pencils

Students are expected to bring text book and writing material to each class session.

 

Student Learning Outcome

  • To gain theoretical understanding of the basic operation of Brake system.
  • To gain knowledge of commonly used diagnostic procedures used in the automotive industry
  • To apply the knowledge gained in a shop (lab) environment.
  • To prepare the student for entry level lube tech or for advance automotive classes.

 

Method of Instruction

This class is divided into lecture, demonstration and lab activity phases.  Lecture / demonstration time covers the theory of unit operation.  The lab phase allows for the student to apply the theory to practical problems.

 

Evaluation

The student’s final grade is based on a point system.

Total points possible during the semester are approximately 905 points.

Cheating

Cheating will not be tolerated.  Cheating will result in the student receiving an F for the assignment, with a written notice given to the student and a copy sent to the department dean.  If cheating continues the student will be dropped from the class and a grade of F will be given for the semester.

 

Students with a disability, who would like to request academic accommodations, is responsible for identifying herself/himself to the instructor and to the Disabled Students Program and Services (DSPS).  To make arrangements for academic accommodations, contact the Disabled Students office in the village, room VL-206 or phone (714) 564-6264, TTY (714) 564-6284 for a referral to the appropriate DSPS department.

 

Automotive Department Policies

  • Tools: Students are required to furnish their own safety glasses .
  • Clothing: Students are required to wear proper shop attire while in the lab.  

                          No open toe shoes are allowed in the lab.  Safety Glasses must be worn

                           while in the lab and appropriate safety equipment (PPEs) 

                           No Safety Glasses--No Work—No lab points

  • Smoking: Santa Ana College is a no smoking campus

                          Smoking is not allowed on campus.

  • Parking: All vehicles parked in the automotive compound must display a valid   

                          work order and parking permit on the dash.  Both of these are issued

                           through the tool room.

                           Vehicles brought in ahead of lab hours or left overnight must be parked

                           in the outside compound in the designated yellow parking zone with a

                           valid auto shop parking permit displayed on the dash. Your vehicle will

                           be ticketed if a permit is not displayed .

 

No student vehicles in the automotive compound without instructor’s permission.

                       

Test / Homework Makeup Policy

 All due dates on homework and quizzes will be adhered to, and NO makeup will be allowed.

Lab assignments are to be turned in when completed.
