Course Description:
This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of children’s development, birth through adolescence. The class will cover general trends of development, as well as how children’s individual rate of development can be a focus. Heredity and environmental influences will be discussed.

Student Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- define human development
- explain the major theories of development
- describe the ecological-systems approach to the study of human development
- differentiate genotype from phenotype
- explain prenatal development and the possible complications at birth
- describe ways in which developmental domains are continuous, sequential and inter-related
- demonstrate knowledge of current research findings as they apply to child development
- demonstrate knowledge of the physical, social/emotional, cognitive and language development of children in major developmental stages
- understand how to identify children at different ages by assessing their developmental skills and abilities
