Meet Your Instructor: Chantal Lamourelle has been a Professor at Santa Ana College since 2013 in the Child Development and Education Studies Department. She has been in the field of Early Childhood Education since the age of 15. Her family owned and operated two child care centers in Orange County (O.C.) that cared for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Chantal has a been a teacher for infants to adults for over 25 years in many diverse settings. From a preschool teacher, grant writer, Education Director at Pretend City Children's Museum, O.C. Department of Education Consultant and community children's advocate have afforded her the opportunity to learn with some of the most influential professionals in the field of early care and education. Chantal truly loves to teach and she strives to continue to be a student of life as well. In her free time, Chantal loves to spend time with her two sons, sing, act, hike, spend time with her family, explore, create, and build stronger connections across communities.

Course Description: This class examines the developing child in a societal context focusing on the interrelationship of family, school and community and emphasizes historical and socio-cultural factors.  Socialization processes and identity development that support and empower families by showing the importance of respectful, reciprocal relationships will be explored. 3 Units.

Additional Course Information:  All students must have an email address and internet access to Canvas every week. 

1. Abide by the Santa Ana College Core Competencies and Student Learning Outcome #3B - Information Competency: Students will use technology learning tools and technology applications at a level appropriate to achieve discipline specific course requirements and standards. Demonstrated skills might include, but are not limited to: word processing and file management; use or development of simulations, web pages, databases; graphing calculators, etc.

2. Have frequent and dependable internet access with a high speed modem;

3. Utilize a computer that has anti-virus software installed;

4. Utilize Microsoft Office 2010 or newer (word, powerpoint, excel, publisher);

5. Type and electronically submit all assignments through Canvas.


Student Learning Objectives:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  •  Demonstrate knowledge about the child as developing within a system
  •  Discuss theories about the role of family, school and community in the process of socialization
  • Compare and contrast diverse family structures, parenting styles, culture, tradition and values
  •  Compare and contrast the impact of changes and transitions upon children and family dynamics
  • Explain and interpret the impact of socioeconomic factors on children and families 
  • Define a variety of contemporary issues that influence family functioning
  • Explain the effects of age, gender, diverse abilities, language and culture, racial identity and ethnicity, socio-economic status, institutions, the media, and public policy on children and families
  • Identify stereotypes and assumptions that affect attitudes and actions within the family, the culture and the professional community
  • Identify early childhood practices that support all children and families
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze risk factors and/or problems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal requirements and ethical responsibilities of professionals in the field of early education
