Math 150 Syllabus
Course Description:
The student will learn the major topics in calculus through applications that are useful in the biological, management, and social sciences. In order to give a more realistic approach, calculators will be used in their solutions. Broad concepts will be mastered instead of specialized manipulative skills. The student should have a clear idea of how calculus can be used as a tool in his/her chosen field of study. Some topics covered are: Derivatives and their many applications; optimization problems, inventory control, two variable functions, related rates, elasticity of demand, growth models. Use definite integrals to find future value, consumer and producer’s surplus, areas and volumes.
Textbook Information:
- MyMathLab Access code (for online homework.) available at MyLab and Mastering website.
- Lecture notes package at Santa Ana College bookstore (or print the lecture notes on MyMathLab.)
- Textbook: Bittinger & Ellenbogen, Calculus and its Apps, 11th (optiontal)
- Scientific Calculator (recommend TI-36X Pro.) NO GRAPHING CALCULATOR. On the quizzes and exams you must have your own calculator or you will not be able to use one. Phones and any devices that have access to the Internet are prohibited during class.

Student Learning Objectives:
Quantitative reasoning- Students will logically solve problems differentiating where to apply derivatives or Integrals. Students will interpret their results and make appropriate conclusions to the real world application. Technology Competency- Students will recognize when to use the graphing calculator to effectively evaluate information.
