Course Description:  

This course offers dialogue and examination of the teacher’s role and appropriate early childhood environments.  Students will develop a teacher’s philosophy and study developmentally appropriate practice and how overall planning affects young children as individuals and as a group.  There will also be an emphasis on the child-oriented process, positive guidance techniques, classroom transitions, and family/school relations. Two outside observations are required.

Learning outcomes include being able to:

  • Identify best practices and intentional teaching as defined within the field of early care and education.
  • Analyze range of delivery systems, program types, and ethical standards.
  • Analyze child development theorists and form a personal professional philosophy.
  • Assess early childhood settings, curriculum, and teaching strategies.
  • Analyze the relationship between observation, planning, and implementation using effective strategies.
  • Examine the value of play as a vehicle for developing skills, knowledge, dispositions, and strengthening relationships among young children.
  • Examine a variety of guidance and interaction strategies to increase children’s social competence and promote a caring classroom.
  • Design and evaluate quality and developmentally appropriate indoor/outdoor settings for young children.
  • Examine professional and academic goals in the ECE field.

Assignments:

 Addendem- 2/17/2018- Weekly Field Experience Journals- Connecting your field experience to the chapter information. Annoucment sent on 2/17/18. 

Weekly Video Discussions- @ 3 points each X 16 chapters (48 points) You will watch a (one) video per week (on Canvas) based on your assigned group letter. Then, you will add a short summary and your thoughts on Canvas. This is due before the class. You are required to ‘teach’ the content of this video to your other group members in class and ‘learn’ from the other group members about their videos. A short written report will be submitted for grading. All components must be completed for full credit. No partial credit given.

Weekly Article Discussions- @ 3 points each X 16 chapters (48 points) You will read an (one) article per week (on Canvas) based on your assigned group letter. Weekly Participation Points - ‘P POINTS’@ 10 points each X 15 weeks (150 points) Participation is an integral part of learning in this class. Every week (class), there will be approximately 2 activities that will be completed in class along with the Discussion Questions (DQ) – to be completed at home. All components must be completed for full credit. No partial credit given.

        Field Experience –   You will be required to work in a child development classroom for 30 hours (3 hours a week X 10 weeks) during the semester.  Based on your day and time of availability, you will be assigned to a Master Teacher at one of our RCCCD child care centers. Out of the 30 weeks, you will complete 27 hours with your master teacher.

  • Big Project – (40 points)- You will complete this project as part of a group of 3-5 other students. Project will be decided by the teacher based on the class/school needs. You will document the progress of this project from start to finish and share the progress as a power point presentation with the class.
  • Role of the Teacher (40 points) During your field experience hours, you will gather the necessary information to complete this paper and upload to Canvas. 
  • Environment ECKERS Evaluation (40 points)- You will visit a different school other than your place of work and a school that has a different philosophy than your practicum location and complete an indoor/outdoor ECERS project, complete the paper and the supporting documents and upload on to Canvas. For this assignment, you will use 3 hours of the 30 hours assigned for your practicum experience. 

     Personal Teaching Philosophy Paper (40 points) Complete and upload to Canvas. Instructions on Canvas.

     Resume/Cover Letter (30 points)- Turn in a hard copy to me- do not upload.

     Final Test (32 points)- This test will consist of Multiple choice /True-False questions from all the chapters and about Title 22.   

     Ed Plan- (30 points) - Meet with our SAC CDEV counselor and plan your Education plan, declare your major as CDEV and upload the paper on to Canvas.

     Mandated Reporter/Gardner’s Quiz/Immunization Records/Choice of placement/ @ 2 each (8 points)

                                            

     

CDEV 111A is an important course that lays the foundation for all the future CDEV classes. In order to pass this class, you must complete all the assignments.

 

Course grades will be based on the number of points that you have earned out of the 500 possible points in the course.  Points are available as follows:

·         If you are absent more than two days (excused or unexcused) your grade will be lowered by one letter grade.

450-500 = A (90-100%)

400-449 = B (80-89%)                  

350-399 = C (70-79%)

300-349 = D (60-69%

299 or fewer = F (less than 60%)
