Meet Your Instructor: Chantal Lamourelle has been a Professor at Santa Ana College since 2013 in the Child Development and Education Studies Department. She has been in the field of Early Childhood Education since the age of 15. Her family owned and operated two child care centers in Orange County (O.C.) that cared for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Chantal has a been a teacher for infants to adults for over 25 years in many diverse settings. From a preschool teacher, grant writer, Education Director at Pretend City Children's Museum, O.C. Department of Education Consultant and community children's advocate have afforded her the opportunity to learn with some of the most influential professionals in the field of early care and education. Chantal truly loves to teach and she strives to continue to be a student of life as well. In her free time, Chantal loves to sing, act, hike, spend time with her family, explore, create, and build stronger connections across communities.
Chantal is Online Teaching Certified and her Canvas Bronze and Silver certifications are pending.
Course Description: CDEV 108 introduces students to assessment of children and classroom activities in early childhood settings using anecdotal, rating systems, and structured assessment strategies. CDEV 108 focuses on the appropriate use of assessment strategies to document child development, communicate with parents and professionals, and inform teaching practices to ensure developmentally appropriate curriculum. 3 Units.

1. Abide by the Santa Ana College Core Competencies and Student Learning Outcome #3B - Information Competency: Students will use technology learning tools and technology applications at a level appropriate to achieve discipline specific course requirements and standards. Demonstrated skills might include, but are not limited to: word processing and file management; use or development of simulations, web pages, databases; graphing calculators, etc.
2. Have frequent and dependable internet access with a high speed modem;
3. Utilize a computer that has anti-virus software installed;
4. Utilize Microsoft Office 2010 or newer (word, powerpoint, excel, publisher);
5. Type and electronically submit all assignments through Canvas.
Student Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically compare the purpose and use of formal and informal observation and assessment.
- Complete systematic observations using a variety of data collection methods to inform environmental design, interactions, and curriculum
- Describe and evaluate the characteristics, strengths and limitations of common assessment tools
- Demonstrate observation methods to provide data to assess the impact of the environment, interactions and curriculum on all domains of children’s learning and development.
- Assess the value of partnerships with families and other professionals in utilizing interpretations of observational data to inform teaching responses and strategies.
- examines successful steps for succeeding academically and professionally in the field of ECE
- Demonstrate listening skills in pursuit of analyzing the substance of others’ comments and enhance speaking skills in an understandable and organized fashion to explain their ideas, express their feelings, or support a conclusion.
- Demonstrate reading and comprehension skills to a college level and be able to write in an organized and grammatically correct fashion to support their opinions and/or conclusion.
