Course Description: Math 180 is the first semester of three in the calculus and analytical geometry sequence. The course will cover limits and continuity, derivatives and integrals of algebraic, trigonometric, other transcendental functions as well as applications including extrema tests, related rates and areas.
Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of the probability unit, students will be able to evaluate limits and test functions for continuity, find derivatives and integrals of algebraic, trigonometric, and other transcendental functions, and utilize derivatives and integrals in applications including extrema tests, related rates and finding areas.
Grades: The traditional 90-80-70% scale is used. 70% is the minimum to pass. The grade breakdown is as follows:
- 4 Exams (60%), 4 Quizzes (10%), Homework (10%), & Comprehensive Final Exam (20%)
Exams: There will be 4 exams that will total 60% of your final grade. No exams will be dropped or made up. No exceptions. Every student must bring their SAC student ID to each exam. Only a simple or scientific calculator may be used on your exams. No graphing, advanced or alternate electronic devices permitted. No calculator sharing. Electronic devices must be powered off and stored away assessments, including watches. If I see or hear your device during a test, you will get a zero on that quiz or test. The tests and quizzes are closed notes and closed book assessments.
Quizzes: There will be 4 short quizzes that are taken in-person, during class, and account for 10% of your grade. The lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester. No graphing calculators or alternate devices may be used.
Homework: All homework is submitted online, via WebAssign. There will be no late work or late extensions given. No exceptions. Homework due dates and times are listed in WebAssign. (WebAssign Course Key: occ.cc.ca 2199 7519). Your lowest homework score will be dropped at the end of the course.
Comprehensive Final Exam: All students are required to take the comprehensive final exam, to attempt to pass this course. The exam will be given in-class on the day of our final meeting, which is Friday 1/26/18. There will be no make-ups or alternate testing dates available for this class. Therefore, do not take this class if you cannot make it to the final exam. Bring a AS100 Scantron, a pencil, and your SAC student ID to the final exam.
Attendance: Any student with 2 or more absences will be dropped from the class, as noted in the school attendance policy. Four late arrivals is equivalent to missing a class, including arriving late from a break or leaving class early. A late arrival is missing less than 15 minutes of class. Missing more time will count accordingly and may count as an absence. There are no make-ups for homework, quizzes, or exams.
Media Resources: With the WebAssign access, there are video tutorials for every section that we cover in class.
Honesty Policy: During all exams and quizzes, calculators cannot be shared. Students are not to communicate with others, and your eyes should remain on your paper. No alternate electronic devices may be used during exams or quizzes. If a question arises during the assessment see the instructor. You may not leave during the exam. Any student caught cheating or assisting another student in the act of cheating will receive a zero on the assignment, quiz or test. (On exam days, the instructor reserves the right to move students to different seats. Do not take this personally)
Special Needs: Any student with a disability, who would like to request an academic accommodation, is responsible for identifying herself/himself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS). To make arrangements for academic accommodations, contact DSPS at phone (714) 564-6264, TTY (714) 564-6284 for a referral to the appropriate DSPS Department.
