Course Description:  

Introduction to medical terminology includes the structural analysis of prefixes, roots, and suffixes of health-related terminology.  Emphasis focuses on terms related to structure (anatomy), function (physiology), diagnostic tests and pathology (diseases) of the digestive, renal-urinary and reproductive systems.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  • Provide an interactive learning environment focused on medical terminology.
  • Analyze words by dividing them into component parts.
  • Relate medical terms to the structure and function of the human body.

Thinking and Reasoning: Student will:

  • Differentiate prefixes, combining forms and suffixes to determine meaning of medical terms.
  • Demonstrate application of learned concepts.

 Communication Skills: Student will:

  • Written assignments will clearly communicate concepts related to medical terminology.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of medical terminology.

Meet Your Instructor:  

Professor Emley began teaching at Santa Ana College in the spring of 1998 as a Nursing Faculty in the third semester of the program teaching Mental Health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing. With the retirement of Dr. Rockoff in 2009, Professor Emley migrated from the nursing department and transitioned into the Medical Assistant department in the fall of 2009. It has been her distinct pleasure to grow and nurture the Medical Assisting Program and engage students in career and vocational education at Santa Ana College.

Professor Emley was born in Santa Ana, CA and moved to Canada, Riverside, Norco, Brentwood, Van Nuys, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Mid-Wilshire District, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Orange, Santa Ana, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo. 

Professor Emley went to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Good Council, St. Mel's, Notre Dame High School, Mount Saint Mary's and University of California, Los Angeles.
