Required TextNone, this class will utilize a combination of in class lectures, and an out of print textbook.

Recommended Text:  Music: An Appreciation, 8th Brief Edition; ISBN-978-0-07-783731-0

Course Goals: To introduce and familiarize the student to the history of western music, as well as foster a deeper understanding of our human experience through a study of music with an emphasis on Western European “Classical” Music.  The class will focus upon developing and improving one's listening skills, as well as, a general survey of the styles, composers, history, religion, philosophy, politics, performance practices, and other socio-cultural factors of the music studied.  You are required to complete assignments in advance and participate in class discussions.  The purpose of the class is to develop the beginnings of informed critical listening and thinking skills as they pertain to the Art of Music.

Student Learning Outcome: Demonstrate understanding of the historical developments in Western music.  Define important musical terms and use those terms accurately in your own vocabulary.  Identify the musical characteristics represented by those terms in a piece of music. Identify specific pieces, periods, and genres based on musical characteristics observed.

Grading:                        70% Two Exams, (35% Each)

20% Concert Review. 10% Listening Logs

Concert Attendance Report:      You are required to complete one (1) Concert Attendance Report.  YOU MUST ATTEND ONE LIVE PROFESSIONAL CONCERT, and type a two-page, double-spaced concert review.  I want two SOLID pages of text, please consider this when you format your report.

Many concerts will count including orchestra, chamber orchestra, choir, orchestra/choir combined, or opera production; or a chamber music concert such as solo piano, string quartet, a solo voice or instrument recital.

The purpose of this assignment is for you to attend and experience a live performance of classical music.  You MUST ATTEND the concert in person and in its entirety.  No electronic or other media transmitted performances count towards completion of this assignment.  The live concerts you attend MUST take place during the Spring 2018 Intersession BEFORE 1/22!

The Sunday Calendar section of the LA Times or the Show section in the OC Register are the best resources for finding concerts and other arts events in Southern California.

Any performance by The Pacific Symphony Orchestra will count, you can find their January schedule here:

https://www.pacificsymphony.org/tickets/concert_calendar

The following concerts at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts will also count:

http://tickets.philharmonicsociety.org/single/eventDetail.aspx?p=15942

http://tickets.philharmonicsociety.org/single/eventDetail.aspx?p=15959

Any performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic will count as well.  Here is their January Calendar:

https://www.laphil.com/tickets/calendar/2018-01

Listening:  ALL of the music that you will need to know for our exams can be found at:

www.soundcloud.com.  Search with the keywords Santa Ana College, Music 101,” and “Marr” to find the appropriate playlist.

If you are unaware of the status of a particular concert for which you are interested in attending, please check with the instructor prior to attending.  Non-professional concerts will not count for this class regardless of how honest the oversight may have been.

Please staple the program and your ticket stub to the review.  I am NOT concerned with perfect spelling and grammar (but PLEASE spell check your review and make it as coherent as possible).  I want to read about your reaction to the performance.  You may talk about the dress, venue, artist, instrumentation or anything you think was relevant to the performance.  Use Times-New Roman 12 pt font with normal margins for your report.  Please do NOT quote anything from the program notes, I can read those myself.  Please e-mail me if you have any questions.

The Concert Report is DUE on: 1/22/18

CONCERT REPORTS ARE DUE ONE WEEK AFTER THE DATE OF THE PERFORMANCE!   INCLUDE THE ESSAY CHECKLIST BELOW!
