When you or someone you care about experiences depression, it can feel overwhelming. Feelings of sadness, worthlessness, having no interest in regular activities, and other symptoms of depression can get in the way of your everyday life—they can even derail your college goals. Depression is an illness that affects college students as much as any other group. It can be mild and managed with self-care and talk therapy, or it may be severe and need more extensive professional care. An important message here is that is can be treated successfully.

The good news is that people experiencing depression are not alone. There are many school and community resources that can support recovery from depression, and include personal coping strategies that can help. This module provides guidance about how to recognize depression in yourself or people you care about, how to get help, and how to engage in self-care.
